I'm an EMDR therapist who can work with all mental health disorders in particular complex trauma, neglect, and PTSD . My background is in Occupational Therapy within the NHS and I can work with varying levels of severity. EMDR I find is an effective tool to address issues or trauma from the past, resolve it, and put it back into the past so it no longer affects a person in the present. It uses techniques that affect a person on a neurological level allowing the client to utilize their own healing processes and resolution.

First of all, I believe therapy is useful for anyone. What is commonly labelled as “mental health”, I would call “quality of life” - something we all struggle to manage. I have experience (and feel comfortable) working with psychosis, issues related to interpersonal trauma, and other aspects of life that feel undesirable or you feel are responded to negatively. I am however opposed to any form of conversion therapy.

I have over 10 years of experience within mental health settings in the NHS and private settings, qualifying as a clinical psychologist in 2018. I believe therapy is about building a non-judgemental and trusting relationship, where we can work together to make sense of your mental health symptoms and find ways to develop more awareness and ways to cope. Finding the right psychological approach is key to the smooth running of this process. Therefore, I utilise a range of psychological approaches that I adapt to suit you. My aim within therapy will be to be curious, empathetic and honest and draw on individual strengths.

Life not turned out how you had expected or hoped? Something not sitting right? A niggling thought or unrest within you? Happiness feels out of reach? Having experienced my own, at times, bumpy journey it has given me a fierce and unshakeable belief that change is possible in us all and we all have the potential to have a life beyond our wildest dreams! That’s not always to say we get what we may have fantasised about but that we work on ourselves; and as we embark on this our dreams change and they become reachable as we become more teachable and learn about the authentic us and what we really want

Therapy is really about negotiating an effective change. It may be that you want to change how you feel about yourself or others. It may be that your outlook on life is making you feel unsatisfied? Perhaps you are at a transition in your life that you want some support with? Perhaps you have lost ways of being in your relationship/s? Some people use ways of coping that make things worse, and need to change. Whatever the change is that you are seeking help to effect, my aim in all this is to help you understand and negotiate a meaningful and lasting change.

You might have been experiencing uncertainty and anxiety, or low self-esteem. Your life experience, or how you relate to yourself and others, may be troubling you. There could be patterns in your behaviour which you feel unable to change- history repeating itself. Possibly the ways that you have learned to see yourself and others are unhelpful, and you are want to create better relationships with yourself and others. Perhaps you are looking for another way, to give yourself time and space to explore and understand yourself better, and how to respond in life situations, relationships and work.

I understand that deciding to start counselling and therapy can feel like a big step, from the start of therapy I encourage my clients to feel empowered through the therapy process. It may be that you've lost a loved one, experiencing family issues, relationship breakdown, struggling with anxiety or work-place stress. It's common to be experiencing a few of these life issues at the same time, which can lead to overwhelm and burnout. As a psychotherapist I aim to offer a tailored approach to each client in therapy sessions.

Given the latest government advice all sessions will be offered online. I have ten years of experience of working in this way and I am happy to give you guidance to set this up. You will need an internet connection (preferably high speed), a headset and microphone. I can also offer telephone sessions but face to face via an online platform is preferable. Psychotherapy is about being listened to and seen in a particular way. There is nowhere else in life that offers a time and space to focus on your 'self' - your body and your mind. My Kent practice is in the village of Bridge near Canterbury and is easy to reach.

You may be finding life tough, finding it hard to put your finger on what’s causing distress. General feelings of sadness and low self-esteem may be making it difficult to see who you truly are. Your sense of purpose may be ebbing, or indeed gone altogether. Instead, there may be a constant, nagging feeling of wishing things were different. But not knowing what that different looks or feels like. Whether or not it even exists. Do you feel your voice is being smothered by work pressures, or your personal aims are being crushed? The overwhelming anxiety that seems to dictate your every thought and move...

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
