Life can get messy. Perhaps you're feeling overwhelmed by the demands of work, family or relationships. Maybe becoming a parent has brought up unexpected questions about your own upbringing, or you're navigating difficult family dynamics, or you've reached a point where simply "getting on with it" isn't working anymore. I offer a warm, friendly and supportive space where you can slow down, talk openly about what's going on and make sense of your experiences at your own pace.

Exploring the possibility of counselling/psychotherapy is a courageous step, one which can enable you to become more fully yourself. Therapy should be a place where you can feel safe and accepted, where you find it easier to share things that are concerning you. It can be a place where you come to find out more about yourself, to challenge yourself and make choices and decisions that lead towards a more positive and hopeful future. Sometimes there is something from our past, an event or an aspect of ourselves, that seems to be holding us back, and therapy can support us in addressing those things too. Be in touch for more info...

Something has brought you here. Maybe it's stress that won't let up, anxiety that has made the world feel smaller, trauma, a phobia or a loss that has changed the shape of things. Many of the people I see are functioning on the outside while carrying something heavier underneath - tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. Or perhaps it's your relationship that feels stuck: the same argument on repeat, jealousy, distance where there used to be closeness or trust shaken by an affair. I work with adults and couples, online across the UK and in person near Shrewsbury.

It isn’t easy being the cycle breaker. Have you ever heard that you are ‘too sensitive’ or felt that your feelings are ‘too much’? Have you ever felt like you are the only one willing to acknowledge what makes everyone else put their heads in the sand? In your family, there may have been abuse, a lack of acceptance for who you are, or even just no space for talking about emotions. There may be historic traumas no one will talk about or patterns that go unacknowledged, and you are left holding the ball on everyone’s behalf. You may experience feelings of perfectionism, disconnection, or guilt about resting or caring for yourself.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist offering a warm, thoughtful space where we can begin to make sense of what feels confusing or stuck.
Perhaps you have reached a point where talking to friends or family no longer feels enough. Even if seeking therapy feels like a significant step, you may now need a space that is entirely your own, where you can pause, reflect, and speak freely. Despite managing a great deal in your daily life, you feel unsettled or quietly exhausted inside. You may feel anxious, conflicted or overwhelmed. You may have noticed that certain patterns keep repeating. You might be navigating life changes, relationship difficulties, separation, or loss. Something no longer feels sustainable, but you still struggle to put it into words.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
