I have expertise in loss, change and bereavement, working with dementia and carers, as well as life changing illness, aging, retirement, menopause, cancer and chronic pain.
As a therapist, with a background as a palliative-trained GP, I understand not only how body and mind function as one, but how we are shaped by all our life experiences. Respecting and accepting you without judgement is my starting point. I have accompanied people and their families through grief, including suicide, illness, dying, life transitions, aging, and cognitive decline. Grief and loss are often linked with bereavement, but they are present across many life experiences. Anything that pulls us from an assumed future into an unfamiliar and unwelcome world may involve grief, looking for a footing on what feels like thin ice.

It may be you find yourself feeling anxious or depressed, experienced a grief or loss of a relationship. You may be struggling with something that has come up in your personal life or find yourself still affected by something that may have happened a long time ago. On top of all my training and client work I have had a lot of life experience and I bring this all into our sessions so I can see and hear you fully. It may be that you feel so overwhelmed you don't know really where to start, or that the words just don't come so easily. In whatever place you find yourself I am ready and able to meet you wherever you are.

Many people experience emotional difficulties at some point in their lives, triggered by a particular event, or as a result of deeper unidentified issues. Talking to a psychodynamic therapist, in a safe and confidential environment, provides a unique opportunity to identify the themes and patterns of thought and behaviour that can generate emotional distress,. This can involve talking through past experiences and understanding how they impact you today. The relationship with the therapist is important, as it provides an opportunity to examine ways of thinking and relating in the here and now as well as developmental factors.

The therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone of any work that we do. In this relationship you are given the space to speak freely. Through careful listening, creativity and challenge, you get to know yourself better. This includes understanding how you have become the person you are, as well as finding more clarity about where you want to go. The therapeutic journey allows you to see what patterns and unconscious beliefs you may feel confined by. This may relate to specific issues such as anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, low self-esteem or addictions, or it could be a general feeling of being stuck.

I treat adults in all stages of life who find themselves in need of help dealing with distress and in making important transitions in life. My clients often feel anxious, depressed or disappointed in life and in themselves. Some feel stuck in life, have difficult work or personal relationships, are raising a family, grieving, have chronic illness or are dealing with old age. Many have tried and been disappointed by short-term therapies. Together we examine both past and present experience to find meaning and new perspectives in order to resolve distress and move forward toward a more fulfilling way of life.

Geriatric and Seniors Counsellors

Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?

Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, dementia, and physical mobility challenges.

How can geriatric therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?

Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

How is counselling for elderly different from counseling for other age groups?

Many aspects of geriatric counselling are similar to counselling in younger age groups; in general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. However, therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

Can geriatric counselling help people who suffer from dementia?

Counselling can be highly effective for aging adults with dementia. While some therapists specialising in dementia may work with clients solely on topics surrounding memory loss, they can also assist clients with conditions that may co-occur at old age, such as anxiety or depression. Counsellors specialising in working with older adults can also offer an objective assessment of a client’s functioning or disease progression to caregivers, and they may be particularly knowledgeable about community resources that may benefit dementia clients and their families. Therapists specialising in dementia may also be trained in specialised forms of therapy for memory loss, such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)—which can help mentally stimulate dementia clients to preserve cognitive functioning.
