I can help your child to feel less anxious, angry or depressed and more at ease.
I am a fully registered Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytical Psychotherapist. I can work with young people from birth up to the age of 25. I work with both the conscious and unconscious aspects of the mind and can help young people with psychological or behaviour problems that are deep seated or that don't seem to make sense. Perhaps your child does or thinks things that are self-defeating or self-destructive. Perhaps they find it hard to love or value themselves even though they are shown they are loved and valued. Perhaps they are inexplicably scared or angry with you or themselves, but feel out of reach. Contact me for help.

Perhaps you are experiencing stress, low-self esteem, the effects of trauma, bereavement or depression.
There is no 'prescription' or quick and easy way to feel better or differently in therapy. Every individual's life experience is their own and calls for an approach that is equally as unique. What is on offer is a space and time devoted to you where what is discussed will be held with care, professionalism and confidentiality.

Feeling Stuck? Not sure what to do next or what that may look like? Counselling can help by exploring the current presenting issue and reasons for its presence in the moment, with some past focus and exploration of the impact of the issue for you coming to therapy. I work with what you need in the room as I believe you are the expert of what is going on and using this to inform the way we tailor support to overcome what has brought you to therapy. I use an array of techniques to suit your needs working with anxiety, stress, grief and loss, relationship issues and long term illness.

Life can often be seen that we put the needs of others' before our own, therefore neglecting ourselves and experiencing difficult environments and emotions. I offer time for 'you' to explore your own needs and provide this by short or long term therapy, based on your emotional needs. As an integrative therapist, I invite clients to experience different ways of exploring personal experiences and create positive change to the challenges that are faced. The therapy I offer is a process that helps you restore your natural sense of harmony and balance.

Therapy means different things to different people. For some, it's about changing a particular behaviour or learning to better manage emotions. For others, it's a space to unpack experiences and gain deeper understanding. Sometimes it's all of these—or something else entirely. My strength lies in helping clients explore, reflect and make sense of their inner world. I aim to create a space that’s safe, accepting, and non-directive, so we can work together to understand why you feel, think, or behave the way you do. Through insight, we can uncover new ways of relating to yourself and others, helping you move toward the life you want.

Some of the clients I work with may be suffering with depression and stress related to their past family and relationship experiences.
People from all walks of life have come to me for counselling for many different reasons. In my work as a therapist the most important thing to me is you! I work in a way that looks at all aspects of you. We would look at your past experiences as these might help us understand what you might be experiencing in the present. We would look at what is going on for you now and at ways of managing this. We would look at what you might like going forward and ways of achieving this. Everything you think and feel would be the focus and whatever is right for you will always be at the heart of our work together.

People come when something isn’t sitting right. Anxiety, overthinking, feeling on edge. Relationships can feel stuck or go round in the same loops. If you’re neurodivergent, everyday things can take more effort than expected. I work with individuals and couples. With individuals, we slow things down and look at what’s actually happening day to day. With couples, I use the Gottman Method, focusing on communication and conflict. I’m a BACP accredited integrative counsellor, trained to Level 6 in supervision and Level 4 in counselling, and I also work as a counselling tutor.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
