We sometimes struggle and feel unable to cope. Difficult feelings such as unhappiness, loss, anxiety, anger, shame, guilt and low self-esteem can impact heavily on our well-being. Sometimes, we just feel stuck — our life is not how we want it to be. It can be daunting to ask for help but counselling provides the opportunity to work through such feelings without judgement or criticism to help guide you through overwhelming issues. It can be key to helping you get your life back on track, as well as enabling you to develop the tools to deal more effectively with future challenges and to make more insightful decisions.

Hi, I'm Catherine and I am a BACP registered Person Centred counsellor. At times we can feel overwhelmed by life - past experiences, difficulties in the present and fears about the future. Counselling can be very helpful during these difficult times. It can enable us change the way we think about feel about things. It can help us explore our thoughts surrounding a particular issue, even when that might be challenging, and increase our self-confidence and self-esteem as we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. By talking through things we all have the power to change our thinking and thrive as a result.

A warm welcome to my page, life can seem extremely difficult at times as we may face situations that are challenging to deal with either on our own or in our relationship. This can leave us feeling quite vulnerable and alone in the world, and may be caused by situations that seem out of our control. Together we can explore the emotions you are feeling, I will help you to unravel all the sad and negative thoughts that keep ruminating within you giving you those difficult feelings to deal with. I will do so in a supportive and empathic way so you no longer feel alone with your struggles.

I have private and NHS experience working with clients with a wide variety of issues, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, bereavement, self-harm, relationship issues, domestic abuse, weight loss, chronic pain, and PTSD. Some clients have a good understanding of their issues and what they want to achieve, whereas others are not so sure and want help to find these things out. Whilst some issues are fairly clear cut, others can be more complex and have been present for a long time. Regardless of this, all of my clients have wanted to make changes that will improve their situation and help them to enjoy life.

I’m Sam and I’m a BABCP accredited cognitive behaviour therapist. I support people who are experiencing depression or anxiety, helping them to reach their goals and improve their quality of life. I aim to support clients to have a better understanding of their difficulties and then work collaboratively together to understand how to change the things that are no longer helpful. I believe that therapy works best when people are active participants and I will support people to do this from the beginning to the end of their treatment, with an empathetic and compassionate approach.

Hello, I am a qualified and registered counsellor. Understandably, contacting a counsellor can be daunting. However, if you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, depressed, lost or are feeling 'something is missing' and you need support, it could be the best decision you ever make. Although talking to a friend or colleague is often helpful, and offers some temporary relief, we sometimes need a professionally trained therapist to 'really hear us' and to listen out for unhelpful patterns of behaviour/beliefs that are keeping us stuck or unhappy. With awareness we have new choices, we can regain control of our lives, forever.

Would you like to talk to someone in confidence? There are times in our lives that we hesitate to share our inner thoughts and feelings, or keep our problems and painful experiences, anxieties, or worries from our friends, loved ones, and family. In times like these, it is helpful to talk things out in confidence to someone who will listen without being judgemental or critical, but will be there to offer a tentative ear with empathic understanding, with a genuine care, warmth and respect.

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
