Thinking about going to therapy can feel humiliating. You might think that you are failing, or not good enough because you need help. You might have internalised that therapy is only for those who are weak or mad, and you know you are not any of those things. Therapy is not a corrective method for what is wrong in someone: it is a journey of transformation, like an adventure, but an internal journey. It takes courage to ask for help and embark on it because it has challenges, but also rewards. Therapy is for the brave ones who decide to leave their past behind, and are ready to change their lives.

Maybe there is a specific event you are aware of, or thoughts & feelings are overwhelming for no known reason. Perhaps you've not been feeling yourself or maybe something has always been missing. Together, we can explore the feelings, thoughts & relational patterns that have been causing you distress. I can support you to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of past experiences & how these may impact your struggles in the present. I hope to encourage self-acceptance as a good enough person, quietening the inner critic & bringing compassion to the relationship you have with yourself & transforming your relationship with others.

Are you looking for the 'right' counsellor? Hi, my name is Lizette and I believe we each have an innate ability to know what is right for our personal situation. But sometimes, due to either loss, trauma, bereavement, abuse, adverse events from our childhood or a life changing event, we lose our direction. Given the right environment, including a safe space to be heard, I can give you time to explore your needs for healing, change and growth. You’ve already made the first step, the next step begins with you trusting your instinct and making the connection that feels right to you.

I am a fully qualified and insured counsellor, working within an ethical code of conduct laid down by NCPS. During our first session we will create a working agreement and begin to establish the foundations of a safe and reliable relationship. Change is possible. I cannot fix another’s pain, but I can support, enable and encourage clients in their own journey of deepening understanding and self-acceptance, utilising the skills and experience I have gathered over the years in working with clients struggling with anxiety, depression, issues around low self esteem and trauma.

Hello, I'm Basia Louise. I'm an experienced Counsellor/Psychotherapist and a member of BACP with a private practice in Newton Abbot. I also volunteer with DCCP a not for profit counselling agency. I believe one of the most important aspect in counselling, is first, in choosing the person you'll do your best work with and then in the building of that theraputic relationship of trust. I offer an open, caring, safe and non judgemental space where I help people get to the root of what is causing their problems and support them in discovering ways to change their lives for the better.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
