I also offer help in developing practical skills in managing narcissistic behaviour, such as carefully considered boundary setting, recognising that boundaries often come with negative consequences.
I understand the dynamics of unhealthy relationships and why we get stuck in them. For couples I help by developing healthy communication, having a safe space to process and discuss difficulties within the relationship. We look at what is going on and develop strategies, with empathy, to improve the quality of the relationship.

Clients generally come to me when they are struggling with some aspect of their emotions, thoughts or behaviour. My aim is to help my client with accepting or changing some aspect of these three areas. Every client comes with unique issues and from my seat I view the issues as one, "a block in the road to wellness". I am keenly aware that all clients come with individual goals and I am here to help. Many of my clients use the phrase “I just want to feel better". This is my hope for everyone who engages with me in therapy. “TO FEEL BETTER” I offer confidentiality, openness and transparency at all times.

I'm a psychoanalytic psychotherapist trained to MA and Doctoral level respectively with adults and children and adolescents. I'm also a visiting lecturer at The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. I have experience of working across the age range with a wide variety of mild to moderate, sometimes more severe presenting problems. Some people see me because they're very unhappy, distressed or worried, others come because they want to understand themselves better and they're curious about why they encounter the same patterns.

You don't have to be in crisis to want to talk things through. Counselling really is all its cracked up to be because having space to talk about how you feel is never a waste of time. But feeling anxious, depressed or unhappy is! Maybe you want to talk to someone but feel unable to share with family or friends. Perhaps you want to make sense of the feelings you are experiencing. You talk, I listen and together we find a new way of being.

It’s good to talk. Voicing your issues and what is going on for you can be the first step to understanding your struggles, worries, confusion or pain. Are you struggling with something? Is there something you would like to understand about yourself? Are you feeling stuck? Are you feeling alone?

I work best with clients that are ready to make a commitment to change, and are ready to develop skills of self-reflection and compassion. Many of my clients have big questions about life and their place in it, as well as questions of who they are and what they want. Some clients don't really know what they want but know that something isn't quite right - that's ok too! Clients choose me because I have well over a decade of experience working a wide range of issues and can quickly and effectively support clients to reach their goals.

I often see these signs in my clients that fuel (even more) anxiety and a loud inner critic: people-pleasing, repeating patterns and a pervasive feeling of being stuck, lost or misunderstood. Perhaps you're struggling with a challenging relationship or the aftermath of leaving a partner. Or you feel a constant sense of anxiety, whether it's about work, friendships, family or a feeling of existential worry, There's usually a common thread with all my clients: disconnection. That could be in terms of social isolation, relationships, your emotions... or it could be self abandonment, when you've lost a sense of who you truly are.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Counsellors

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
