My aim in working with people is to promote well-being and achieve a good quality of life. Our first step is to think about your values and personal goals and what changes in your life you would like to see. We can then think about how to tackle any problems or difficulties in order to address these directly or think about strategies for minimising the disruption they cause. I help people struggling with anxiety, low mood, excessive self-criticism, trauma symptoms, panic, obsessive compulsive disorder and paranoia.

I work with low mood and all of the anxiety disorders, including trauma, OCD, health anxiety, stress and phobias.
I have been a psychologist for over 20 years and have extensive experience working with everything from complex trauma to simple phobias. Although I have a lot of practical knowledge & training, my clients have described me as warm & approachable. I love my job and feel privileged to share in my clients' journeys. My aim will be to work with you to help you reach your full potential and put to the side any psychological problems that are getting in the way. As such, I will work to help you understand where & why your problem started but at the same time, provide a tool bag of strategies to help you to move towards your best self.

Taking the first step in therapy may be the hardest. Perhaps you have never opened up to anyone before, and this might seem like a daunting or overwhelming prospect. It is easy to get stuck in old patterns of behaviour, which prevent us from realising our potential or moving our lives forward. Do you carry baggage from your past or have fears for the future? You may be struggling to come to terms with the loss of a loved one, or perhaps you have self-destructive thoughts. You could have problems with addiction or depression or be locked in an abusive relationship or an unhappy marriage. I am here to help you find the real you.

Starting therapy can feel unnerving, often it takes time and courage for one to take the first step. Often this initial anxiety about starting therapy can be down to, in part, not knowing what to expect. An initial session, often referred to as an assessment, can be a way of knowing whether or not you and I would like to start working together. Perhaps there are specific things in your life that are bothering you, or maybe you are not sure about why you are feeling the way that you are. Therapy is a place where we can think together in a confidential space.

Do you feel you are simply functioning rather than truly living? Are you weighed down by difficult past experiences or trauma? Are they defining how you view yourself and the choices you make? Living every day with lower self confidence and self doubt can stop you enjoying what you have in your life now or taking a chance to try something new. It can feel daunting to face this distress, however equally challenging to continue carrying it with you. You may well feel exhausted trying to hold it all together or as though you are missing out on what life could be like.

Common difficulties I work with are depression and anxiety, low self-esteem and trauma. This means you might be struggling to manage stressors in your daily life, often feeling overwhelmed and that life is just too much to cope with. My aim as a therapist is to help you develop the skills and tools you need to manage life’s challenges again and to help you feel hopeful about the future.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
