Sometimes we just need someone to talk to, outside of our immediate circle, who will listen without judgement. There are so many reasons why we seek counselling and for each person these reasons may change over time. Whilst counselling for one person may be about releasing and being heard, for someone else it may be to work on the past or for another to work on current challenges or towards a future goal. Driven by the nature of our work together, I employ creative and/or practical methods, depending on your preferences and what you feel you need from your sessions. As each client’s needs vary, so does the therapy that I provide.

If you are feeling troubled and are not sure how to move forward it may be a relief to talk things through. I specialise in working with people who have lost someone close, experienced a trauma that haunts them or an unexpected change in life such as a sudden loss, a health, work, or family problem. Difficulties in your relationships or work can cause anxiety, anger and loneliness in daily life and impact your sense of self. Often problems stem from the past, and unhealthy patterns can re-emerge. I can offer a safe space where together we can explore, locate, and work through what is troubling you so as to help you move forward.

I am a highly experienced psychotherapist, offering a safe, calm and supportive space for you to work through those experiences and feelings, which are preventing you from leading a happy and fulfilling life.

Starting therapy can feel unnerving, often it takes time and courage for one to take the first step. Often this initial anxiety about starting therapy can be down to, in part, not knowing what to expect. An initial session, often referred to as an assessment, can be a way of knowing whether or not you and I would like to start working together. Perhaps there are specific things in your life that are bothering you, or maybe you are not sure about why you are feeling the way that you are. Therapy is a place where we can think together in a confidential space.

I specialise in seeing individual clients who have experienced loss and grief, and couples who need support around their relationships. Even in situations where we do not experience bereavement explicitly – in divorce, for example, or when events conspire to permanently deny us certain opportunities – we can experience this shattering dimension of loss. It can be very difficult to talk about these issues, others do not know what to say to you, and may even minimise your loss. It can be a great relief to speak to someone non-judgmental, who really listens and can understand the world from your perspective.

I opened Ataraxia counselling at the beginning of 2018. Just over a year in and the practice is growing faster than expected. I work with clients with all types of issues and personalities. My experience so far is predominanty mental health as i have worked for Mind in mid Herts and addiction as i also work for ADAS a drug and alcohol agency. If i was to say i had a niche it would be that i can make shy clients feel at ease early on using a relational supportive style of counselling. I would love to welcome new clients to Ataraxia. Look forward to hearing from you. Mark

Infertility Counsellors
How can infertility affect couples and their relationship?
Clients who are dealing with infertility may experience conflict and communication problems. It’s not unusual for shame, blame, and guilt to arise in cases of infertility, whether the source of the problem is one partner or both. This means that clients are upset and pulling away from their partner just when they need them the most. Some clients may find it difficult to spend time around friends and family who are pregnant. Friends and family can also make hurtful comments that increase tension during this time.
How does therapy for infertility issues work?
The therapist will begin by gathering information about the client or couple and make a treatment plan for their specific concerns. In addition to addressing common mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma reactions or PTSD, therapists can help clients improve their decision-making and deal with stressors unique to infertility. Some examples include coping with the “two-week wait” before a pregnancy test, the distress associated with a failed attempt or miscarriage, and the shame and blame sometimes associated with reproductive concerns.
What type of therapy is best for infertility issues?
Many therapists offer psychotherapy for individuals and couples who are dealing with infertility issues. Some helpful therapeutic approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which can aid clients in reframing negative thoughts about their situation. Expressive writing and art therapy can help clients process difficult feelings. Clients might also benefit from group therapy to experience support from others who are dealing with the same problems.
How long does therapy for infertility issues take?
There is no set length for therapy that addresses infertility or reproductive concerns. Some clients might find it helpful to continue therapy during their pregnancy to have healthy ways to cope with any associated stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma. Some clients who decide not to pursue fertility treatments might benefit from the support of a therapist. The duration of therapy varies depending on the individual client’s specific needs and goals.
