I opened Ataraxia counselling at the beginning of 2018. Just over a year in and the practice is growing faster than expected. I work with clients with all types of issues and personalities. My experience so far is predominanty mental health as i have worked for Mind in mid Herts and addiction as i also work for ADAS a drug and alcohol agency. If i was to say i had a niche it would be that i can make shy clients feel at ease early on using a relational supportive style of counselling. I would love to welcome new clients to Ataraxia. Look forward to hearing from you. Mark

I was deputy manager at a respected day-rehab and also spent many years working for a national addiction charity.
Is it time to talk to someone? Are you suffering from anxiety or depression? I'm an experienced, qualified BACP registered psychotherapist and level 7 (the highest level) counsellor and a UKCP Full Clinical Psychotherapist. I provide general therapy for whatever is making you less than content, plus various specialisms (see below). Therapy lets you clear the mist, see the real issues, and make positive changes. Is now the time to invest in your future contentment and happiness? I believe that therapy should be friendly, supportive, confidential, and healing, allowing you to find your true self. I work with individuals and couples.

Taking the first step in therapy may be the hardest. Perhaps you have never opened up to anyone before, and this might seem like a daunting or overwhelming prospect. It is easy to get stuck in old patterns of behaviour, which prevent us from realising our potential or moving our lives forward. Do you carry baggage from your past or have fears for the future? You may be struggling to come to terms with the loss of a loved one, or perhaps you have self-destructive thoughts. You could have problems with addiction or depression or be locked in an abusive relationship or an unhappy marriage. I am here to help you find the real you.

It may be that you want to discuss a current life event, or something that has been troubling you for some time. Being listened to with empathy and non-judgement can help you to deal with issues that are causing distress or unhappiness. The cause can be known or they maybe unknown. Relationships can get stuck in repetitive patterns. Issues that therapy can help with and that are often hard to overcome include: low self esteem, relationship issues , depression, childhood trauma, sexual issues, anxiety and stress . I also work with bereavement, loss, addiction and substance misuse , health related issues.

Therapy helped me. It can help you too. I’ve been where you might be right now…stuck, wanting to change and not knowing how. Embarking on a journey of self-discovery can be daunting and challenging. I’m privileged to be able to guide others to their own transformation. My goal is to help clients find both the meaning for their behaviours as well as a clear understanding of what’s holding them back, always encouraging them to find the “gift of growth” in every situation. My aim is to provide a safe and nurturing space for you to tell your story with no fear of judgement.

Sometimes coping with life can become problematic because situations may lead us along a difficult pathway. We may try to understand our own behaviours, thoughts and emotions and those of others, but coping may not be easy. I regard each person as an individual in their own right, so my practice aims to suit diverse clients' needs. I bring together a variety of techniques to support people with a range of issues.

The past couple of years has made therapy accessible to all and online therapy was a lifesaver when we were not able to see our therapists in person and still is for many. For some, speaking to a counsellor virtually may feel like work, when you are already working from home and attending online meetings, it may also be difficult to switch off, having your family or flatmates close by during a session. Finding a therapist who is willing to see you face to face has recently become quite challenging. There's something quite calming about just sharing your thoughts and feelings in a space knowing you won't be interrupted.

Therapy can make a difference - it can help you to carry on when you feel that life is impossible. Each of us has our own story to tell, and our own particular reason for choosing therapy. Perhaps you are finding it hard to cope with the end of a relationship? Or feeling the pain of raw grief at losing a loved one? You may have been living with painful feelings and thoughts for a long time, perhaps because of an unhappy relationship with parents or siblings - the effects of dysfunctional relationships can build up over years, affecting your self-esteem and confidence.

Starting therapy can feel unnerving, often it takes time and courage for one to take the first step. Often this initial anxiety about starting therapy can be down to, in part, not knowing what to expect. An initial session, often referred to as an assessment, can be a way of knowing whether or not you and I would like to start working together. Perhaps there are specific things in your life that are bothering you, or maybe you are not sure about why you are feeling the way that you are. Therapy is a place where we can think together in a confidential space.
