Transpersonal Counselling in Edgware

I am an integrative psychotherapist/counsellor, meaning I have been trained to use a variety of approaches to be able to work fluidly with you and whatever issue has led you to seek therapy. Part of human experience is to encounter challenges in many different guises. Sometimes these challenges upset our inner equilibrium and that can feel very difficult and overwhelming to cope with. Maybe you have been coping with something for a long time? Perhaps you are looking for support beyond family and friends? My strength is in my ability to create a warm, supportive space in which you can talk without fear of being dismissed or judged.

Body Psychotherapy is a holistic form of psychotherapy which naturally incorporates the body within the psychotherapeutic process. Our life experiences are experienced in the mind, and also felt, sensed and held in our bodies. As in other forms of psychotherapy, we work together to understand and therapeutically work through the issues you face. Together, we explore your skills and talents that you can utilise and explore the ability and capacity to heal, develop self-awareness and open the way for new modes of being. The support, growth and transformation occur through the quality of the relationship we form together.

I am a transpersonal practitioner trained at the Psychosynthesis Trust.
Although psychosynthesis is a 'talking therapy', its more than just talking. I work with a number of techniques depending on the client's needs and presenting issues. Most importantly I hold a 'bifocal' view of my clients; I am not only considering what they are presenting, I am also looking for the positive thing that is emerging from their disturbance.

I trained originally as a Gestalt counsellor, and now am undertaking deeper training as a transpersonal psychotherapist.
Do you feel frightened that your world might fall apart if you look at your sexuality or gender? Maybe you have thoughts going round and round in your head, and feel like you’ve lost track of perspective. Maybe you: don't like sex/like sex 'too much' /wrong kind of sex? Your gender doesn't fit with other people's idea of you. You may feel you are betraying your family, children or culture by expressing yourself. You may believe that what’s inside you is too shocking, or wrong or too much for the people around you. You may feel like there’s no-one you can talk to, which can be very isolating.

As I am trained in Integrative Transpersonal Psychotherapy, the Alexander Technique and Craniosacral Therapy, my work can help to identify and resolve pain and discomfort, whether manifesting in the body, mind, or more usually a combination of both.
Psychotherapy helps us to understand how our experiences and the stories that we tell ourselves restrict us. Bodywork alongside traditional therapy help us to identify how we embody these stories and invites a release while allowing a deep but subtle sense of inner calm. They can help to teach a different way of experiencing and moving through the world.

Using psychodynamic depth, person-centred warmth, and transpersonal exploration, we create space for empowerment and growth.
Therapy is a space for you to feel seen, understood, and supported as you navigate the complexities of life. I help you explore yourself, make sense of what feels overwhelming, and create change from within. Based on your goals/needs, we co-create the therapeutic space, aiming for an open, communicative and reflective relationship.
I use a variety of therapeutic approaches. Psychodynamic therapy, my specialty, is where we explore how your past shapes your present relationships, behaviours, and emotional patterns. Going beyond conscious thought, we explore the deeper feelings and unconscious influences that drive these patterns.

How does transpersonal therapy work?
Transpersonal therapy focuses on a patient’s spirituality and meaning in life. Transpersonal therapists might borrow from Eastern traditions as well as Western psychology. They may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork to produce altered states of consciousness. The therapist helps the patient to access their consciousness and spirituality to work through difficult mental states.
How long does transpersonal therapy last?
Because the goal is to understand a person as a whole, including their spirituality, treatment can range from months to a year or beyond. While patients learn the philosophy behind transpersonal therapy during treatment, they can also practice its principles throughout life after therapy sessions have ended.
Is transpersonal therapy effective?
Patients have found success with transpersonal therapy; this method is useful in improving anxiety, depression, self-esteem, identity, fears, relationship problems, and other concerns. Improvements in problem areas can continue even after transpersonal therapy ends, as individuals can utilise the tools they’ve learned during treatment sessions.
What are the limitations of transpersonal therapy?
There is some research on the effectiveness of transpersonal therapy, but empirical support for this therapy approach is sparse. It does not have the robust evidence base of other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy.
