Hello and welcome to my site. Life is not lived in isolation. Tensions, sadness and anger to mention a few, can upset your equilibrium. This psychological turmoil creates 'dis - ease' and can be daunting, leaving one depressed, demotivated, etc - it all needs attention. By giving expression to these feelings in a safe, talking therapy environment where CBT together with an Integrative approach is offered, the light can start to shine once more. Let’s journey together to find a path through to navigate life’s challenges with renewed strength and clarity. Naturally compassionate. Let's meet and greet!

My approach is psychodynamic: this means that I work with the deeper underlying issues.
Sometimes in life you arrive at a point where you know that you need some help. The problems that you are facing are too much for you to overcome on your own. In particular, if you are a young adult, you are confronted with a unique set of challenges that needs someone who understands those challenges and has experience in helping you navigate your way through them. Whether it is bullying, or a feeling that you don't fit in, or whether it is depression and anxiety, stress or relationship problems or problems to do with gender and sexuality, I can offer you a safe place to explore these issues.

What does a Psychodynamic Counsellor offer over a CBT Counsellor?
I apply Psychodynamic Theory in a straight forward manner to help you understand what is troubling you and how, working collaboratively we can lessen the symptoms that have brought you to counselling. I have worked effectively, but not exclusively with individuals experiencing low mood, anxiety, hopelessness, difficult family relations and low self esteem.

A typical treatment plan involve exploring your past and present experiences, identifying patterns, and addressing emotional pain through a combination of humanistic and psychodynamic therapy.
Anxiety, feeling on edge, distressing thoughts, depression, avoidance, loss of interest, or excessive self-blame are common reactions to trauma. These responses are often overlooked, yet they can create significant obstacles in life. With over two decades of experience in psychology, special education, and therapy, I specialize in trauma, PTSD, relationship difficulties, divorce, and parenting. I believe safety and validation are essential for healing, and I aim to create a space where your emotions and experiences are fully acknowledged and validated.

Life can be tough, and sometimes you can be overwhelmed by seemingly impossible problems. I specialise in helping adults dealing with the challenges of caring for others or who are bereaved. I also have a special focus on older clients many of whom have never had counselling before. It can be an enormous help when a trained, non-judgemental person, independent from those around you, really listens to you. My work helps you find a positive way through challenges, thoughts, and feelings. This helps you manage the complications of life which can lead to stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression if not addressed.

My strength is in my ability to create a warm, supportive space in which you can talk without fear of being dismissed or judged.

"Dianne helped my husband and I bridge seemingly impossible gaps in our understanding of each other and ability to communicate despite considerable differences. Dianne took us from a place where we encountered apparently unresolvable emotional blockages daily, from a place of frustration and chronic misunderstanding to a place where we were able to appreciate each other's feelings and show love to one another increasingly unreservedly. She was skilfully professional, without ever faltering in compassion or humanity. She has given us the tools we needed to succeed in our marriage and we are hugely grateful for her help. " Annon

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
