I have a broad range of experience, from working with non-verbal clients on the autistic spectrum, to those with learning disabilities, eating disorders, OCD and long term health conditions.
Hi, I am Shoshana. I am an Art Psychotherapist. Whether you are struggling to cope with current events or longer term unresolved feelings, I can help you explore the meaning of these emotions and how to process through them to become healthier and happier in yourself. By using art in the therapy, we can explore deep rooted causes for why we feel the way we do. Art helps us reach our unconscious voice that wants to be heard. Through developing a relationship in a safe and confidential space, I will help you explore what it is that you need to process.

In a safe, reliable and comfortable setting I will offer you a non-judgemental space in which to explore difficult feelings and share your thoughts. Life is often fast paced and I would like to offer you the opportunity to slow down a little.

I am a integrative counselor, trained in psychodynamic and person centred. Treatment plans are individualised, but typically involve looking at managing difficult thoughts and feelings related to living with a health condition and learning how to live a rich, valued and meaningful life even with pain or illness.
Are you struggling with chronic pain or illness? You are not alone. The clients I see describe feeling trapped and like their life is being controlled by their health condition. Many feel low or anxious because of it and struggle to sleep well. It can feel like others do not understand what it is like to live with pain or illness, which can feel isolating from friends, family and colleagues. Pain and illness can impact all areas of life, including relationships, hobbies, work and day to day chores. In this position it can be difficult to see how your life can be valued and fulfilling still. This is where I can help.

The process of learning to overcome ones challenges needs to be a process we actually enjoy, which is why humour plays an important role in my therapeutic practice.
The world facing our children and young people today is an extremely complicated one. Dealing with an unpredictable, and at times, chaotic environment, can test our mental and physical systems. The seeds of worry can be sown in a myriad of ways but nearly always ends up with the young person internalising their problems, which then manifest in increasingly problematic ways such as OCD, Tics, Self-Harming, and body image issues. Underlying all of these symptoms is a powerfully negative view of themselves which, if unchecked, can become overwhelming.

I work with all sorts of different issues and problems - treating each person as a unique individual, whilst also trying to tap in to theory and learning from my work where it will help each of my clients.
I'm an integrative therapist, which means i work with different theories and ways of working - but ultimately i work with you and how you feel above everything. I explore attachment with you which influences nearly all our relationships, use Person Centred principles -believing in your own wisdom and knowledge of where you want to be psychologically.

My NHS work has involved forensic and learning disability settings as well as palliative care, working with frontline staff and within direct patient care.
Often, individual difficulties are accompanied by the challenges of daily life, which make each person’s experience different and their therapeutic needs unique. Through short or long term therapy, I aim to support meaningful change in areas you would like to work on, with an understanding of the wider picture of how these issues may feature in daily life.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
