I specialise in working with adults who have been affected by trauma, which could include low self esteem, anxiety, people-pleasing, avoidance, overthinking, struggling with overwhelming feelings, or reacting more strongly than expected to situations.
Are you struggling with overwhelming feelings that don’t quite make sense? Do you find yourself reacting more strongly than expected, or often feel physically tense? Perhaps past experiences keep surfacing unexpectedly, leaving you unsettled or on edge. Sometimes, the things we’ve been through can affect the way we have learnt to respond, which is our brain and body’s way of protecting ourselves from being hurt by such experiences again. This can lead us to think the worst, blame ourselves for things going wrong, or see things as more dangerous than they really are. We might also avoid situations, or keep busy to avoid thinking.

Maybe you've been feeling anxious, sad, lonely or stuck?
As a woman, do you put other people's needs above your own and find it difficult to say no? Maybe it's hard to say how you really feel or to ask for what you need? Do you find being nice all the time and avoiding upsetting anyone could be taking it’s toll, especially when you already feel stressed and overwhelmed by the many roles and relationships in your life? I wonder what life would look like if you felt calmer and more confident in yourself? How would it change your personal relationships and your life in general? What would it feel like to be able to voice what it is you want? It's certainly challenging being a woman today.

I work with anxiety and depression and aim to build a trusting environment where you can develop self-awareness to understand the causes of concerns and confidently set goals and new positive behaviours.
Hi, I am Russell and I run a private counselling practice called Woven Counselling. I believe in offering a therapeutic experience that is as unique and individualised as each person who walks through my door. Woven Counselling draws on the multi-layered aspects of therapy. A process of exploration and the unravelling of the many tightly woven threads of life that can cause challenge and conflict. These threads include our own unique experience of childhood, as a young person the process of forming a unique identity and seeking where we belong, and as an adult a culmination in all that has gone before that shapes our view view.

You may feel caught in the same painful patterns - arguments that go no where, anxiety, self-doubt, or relationships that make you feel stuck.
Couples can easily become trapped in painful cycles where neither partner feels truly heard or understood. Miscommunication can make either party feel defensive anger, or pull one of you to withdraw. Together we will work to uncover your patterns of communicating and learn new ways to see and hear each other. We will rebuild trust and empathy.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
