I specialise in guiding clients to access the innate wisdom and creativity of their unconscious mind, and to develop mindfulness of body, thoughts and feelings so that they are less swept along by unhelpful thoughts and feelings, and more able to access inner calm.
If you decide to work with me it will be rather like setting out on a journey together. On that journey I’ll be your fellow traveller, companion and guide. Whether or not your reason for coming to see me is an external situation that’s impacting your life, a key part of our time together will be to explore your inner world. As we explore that world together you may develop greater insight into patterns of thought and behaviour that served you once but now limit you; you may find alternative ways of approaching difficulties; you may discover a way of being in the world that is more in tune with who you truly are.

With experience of working in both the NHS and charity sector, I offer trauma informed therapy, integrating the arts, mindfulness , breath and body work.
At times, we can find it difficult to connect with those closest to us or even with ourselves. Traumatic events, change, loss and ongoing stress can lead us to feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, irritated, confused or low and lacking in motivation. If this resonates with you, I provide a confidential space in which you can express, explore and reflect on your experience without blame or judgement. I work with calm compassion and gentle curiosity. By supporting you to enhance self awareness and develop self acceptance, you can move towards more satisfying, life-affirming, choices and connections.

I offer integrative and creative therapies drawing on mindfulness as a grounding tool for anxieties.
I have experience in dealing with young people as well as being grounded in working with older adults and their issues. Young adult suffering from low mood or anxiety, adolescents struggling with school based issues, eating disorders, social anxieties and traumas of family life are suited to my practice. It can be difficult reaching out for help but if you can connect correctly with another individual it can help build confidence and rebuild your life. Many people struggle with unresolved pain or illness. I offer techniques to cope with these issues. Often psychological barriers prevent our healing successfully.

People are individuals, and I'm commited to the idea that the support they receive should reflect this and come from a place of positive personal empowerment. Life can be complex and challenging at times. We may feel anxious, sad, lost or overwhelmed by our relationship, work, loss of a loved one, lack of confidence or low self-worth. We may find ourselves struggling with depression, insecurity, lack of sleep, infidelity, shame, infertility and we lose hope that we'll ever feel differently again. It's at times like these that you may have wondered how psychotherapy can help you. You may feel nervous about seeking help, which is quite normal. However, you'll find a relaxed and warm atmosphere while working with me.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
