We grow and change with our environment. We flourish in favourable conditions and feel we are slowed down by difficulties and stresses along the way. We adapt to what we face and sometimes through painful and complicated times we lose a sense of confidence in ourselves and who we are. Then it may be helpful to have someone with us so that we can identify for ourselves how to grow and move forwards. It is an opportunity to look at how we feel, what is important to us, to understand ourselves and feel more in touch with who we really are and who we want to be.

You might be looking for help to make some changes, to process loss or to find some relief from feeling anxious, depressed or stressed. I offer a non-judgemental, empathic space in which we can work through your issues together. It can feel difficult and isolating when you're stuck in unhelpful patterns of thinking, behaving and relating.  Talking it through with me could bring some relief.  Counselling can be an immensely healing and rewarding process. Contact me to discuss open-ended talking therapy or short-term if preferred.

I use a model of therapy which has a clear and effective set of organised ideas that is brief and solution focussed. Human Givens therapy encompasses all effective approaches to helping people. It is truly holistic, scientific and practical. The sessions are not designed to be multiple or long term. The intention is to work with the client to achieve the outcome they want in as short a time-frame as possible – and therefore they can move on, fully equipped for the next chapter.

Hello, are you feeling low? experiencing anxiety? dealing with a loss or bereavement? Maybe you are struggling with emotional issues from the past that are intruding in your current life? At times we can find life difficult and struggle to make sense of it. Overcoming our problems on our own or talking with people we are closest to can be hard so speaking confidentially to a counsellor may be what you are looking for. Talking helps you to explore your thoughts and feelings so you can get a clearer view of your life. I will listen without judgement to how it feels to be you so you can discover what really matters to you.

As a therapist I see my role as being there to hear how people feel, how you feel. It is sometimes about hearing the darkest feelings and thoughts, and being a companion for people as they take tentative steps to share where they are. Psychotherapy is a way of listening to someone's experience. It is almost impossible to describe how you listen. You listen to what is said; you listen for feelings which are often hidden deep down;  you listen to how someone makes you feel.  Sometimes beyond words there are no words; it is hard to say much about the body or dreams except that I believe they are a central part of people's lives.

We can sometimes struggle with anxiety, relationships, and feel a sense of disconnection from life, not knowing our purpose, how others view us, and how to find meaning in our lives. Some of us struggle with boundaries, finding ourselves pleasing others: family, friends, or work. This can result in frustration, feeling powerless, and depressed. Talking to family and friends becomes a discussion, a sharing of information, a risk of being judged or told what to do. This is where therapy can help, by providing a safe, non-judgmental space to explore our feelings and give them validation, enabling us to grow strong.

Maybe your child is going through an emotionally tough patch at the moment? I help parents in situations of emerging problems related to children or parents' relationships with children, in situations of parents' doubts about their upbringing methods or doubts resulting from concerns about the child's mental health. Often people wonder how counselling or talking to someone can help. When you see a Counsellor/Therapist, you will have a consistency and continuity of a professional relationship, which provides you a space where you are being properly listened to. This can then allow you to think, and get a clear idea of what is going on for you. Together with your Counsellor/Therapist you can begin to explore and unpack your ideas, views, opinions, etc. This could lead you to more clarity and you may become more mindful of yourself.

Growth and healing is beautiful to both experience and witness. My approach to health is by focusing on the presenting symptoms and working with the patient to find solution focused therapies. These include having time for each person, to listen and offer my experience as a fully qualified psychotherapist/hypnotherapist to enable better health, emotionally, mentally and physically. Too much anxiety and worry can lead to conditions and illnesses such as depression, phobias, panic, pressure, fatigue, IBS, weight fluctuations, sleep deprivation, relationship issues, unhappiness and even physical pain.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
