I believe the most important thing is to build a good relationship between counsellor and client, a relationship where you can feel secure, accepted, and heard. Through this relationship, awareness of how we feel can be found and with that a healthier way of managing our behaviours can be achieved.

You might feel like your mind is always “on”, overthinking things and struggling to switch off. Or perhaps you feel emotionally intense, easily overwhelmed, or caught in repeating patterns even when you’re trying to change them. From the outside, it can look like you’re coping, but underneath it doesn’t feel that way. Reaching out for support can feel daunting, and I understand that. Many of the people I work with are used to holding things together on the outside, while inside it feels busy, overwhelming, or exhausting.

My core training has been in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy which has an understanding that early life experiences and associated coping strategies have a strong impact on present patterns of relating.
My psychotherapy philosophy is that everyone has the resources within themselves to find meaning, purpose and fulfilment in their lives. Sometimes we need some help in accessing these internal resources. If you find yourself feeling stuck, depressed or anxious possibly from external life events, problematic relationship issues, or other internal psychological struggles which may be more difficult to understand, you may find it helpful to speak to a counsellor. Talking about issues of concern in a confidential environment can lead to greater understanding, more self awareness and clarity about best ways forward.

In psychodynamic psychotherapy, there is a focus on your emotional world and how feelings are expressed or avoided; in time, we'd identify recurring themes and patterns in your life; we would think about past experience and how it relates to the present; we'd get to know your relationships, including the therapy relationship itself; and, because emotional conflict is often unconscious, we would explore the non-verbal parts of your experience – daydreams, dreams, gestures, movements, sensations and intuitions – the things in our experience that sit closer to unconscious life.
If you would like to get in touch, we would meet for an initial consultation to discuss what has prompted you to find a therapist and how psychodynamic therapy might be able to help. If we both have the impression that we can work together then we would find a regular time when we could meet - a 50 minute session, usually once a week.

Counselling can benefit us all at some point in our lives. Sometimes it feels as though life or our relationships are no longer working and the pressures of modern life can get too much. Sometimes we feel too lonely or scared to face life alone. We may feel overwhelmed and out of control, meaning we change our behaviours to try and cope. That is why therapy can be beneficial to explore a change of direction, lifestyle or thoughts patterns, relaxation or self-care, or simply to just be with another whilst you take time to talk things through.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
