Modern life is busy and can be challenging for many of us at some time in our lives. Anxiety, depression and other difficulties can get in the way of living the life that we want, and it can be hard to figure out what to do for the best. Working with an experienced therapist who'll listen in a non-judgemental way to help you understand your problems, what might have caused them or be keeping them going, and what you could do differently can make a huge difference.

Hi, I'm Matthew and I am an Individual, Family & Couples Psychotherapist, specialising in anxiety management, low mood and neurodiversity.
I work with people helping them to think about how they communicate with others and how certain behaviours can be problematic in relationships. Are you tired of constantly thinking about food, exercise or losing weight? You’re “good” for a few weeks, only to self-sabotage and beat yourself up after another binge. Perhaps food has always been the go to – whether you’re happy, stressed, or frustrated. Or perhaps exercise is the problem - you struggle to stick to a routine, or worry it's becoming obsessive. You may dislike your body, and feel a failure for letting yourself go. If these resonate, you’re not alone. It’s easy to get stuck in these negative cycles, but with the right support it's possible for things to change.

Not everyone has the same approach to life's problems such as personal and psychosexual relationships, grief, loss, bereavement, illness and stress, nor to the typical challenges of family relationships. The context of culture, ethnicity, race, gender, class, sexual orientation and spiritual beliefs influence the ways in which we view the world and how the world views us. I work with couples and families, children, teens and individuals, to resolve issues in a way that is sensitive to their culture and context; and together we develop solutions that are congruent with their values. I like to work from a strengths based orientation

I help my clients (individuals and couples) achieve their therapeutic goals either by discussing their current or past issues through counselling/psychotherapy or some clients also opt to have hypnotherapy with me too (you can read about that on my website).
I specialise in helping people build confidence and navigating their blind spots. All my work is flexible around the needs of the client. I work along side clients rather than directing them down a particular path and help them identify their behaviour and challenge when/where they want me to.

The relationship between us is where the good stuff happens.
I’m Ben, a psychotherapist and counsellor working online, on the phone and in-person from central Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. I am a person-centred (or client-centred) therapist which means that our sessions are about you, your life and your experiences. You might have a very clear idea of why you would like therapy, or you might have a more general feeling that therapy might be useful for you. All that matters is that it's your choice. Wherever things start, my experience is therapy can be a route to understanding, healing and growth; it can bring a kind of peace with where you are, where you've been and where you want to go.

You are not broken. You may be feeling emotional pain, distress, or psychological strain, but that doesn’t mean you are damaged. These responses often reflect your strength and resilience. What you're experiencing is an emotional build-up, not a breakdown. You might be living with anxiety, depression, grief, low self-worth, or trauma. Over time, you may have built defences to cope and protect yourself. These patterns helped you survive, but they are not your truest self. Healing begins by gently reconnecting with the parts of you that have been hidden, and making space for who you truly are.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
