Regardless of your reason for dropping by. Thank you for visiting my information page, it's really appreciated. If this is your first time visiting counselling directories. Choosing a counsellor can be a daunting process and no doubt your inner dialogue will be going into overdrive right about now. With thoughts like "Wow there are so many people where do I start?" As you scroll through your cheeky sabotage monkeys may be screaming OMG!!! This is just to overwhelming. Along with questions like "What does my problem come under?" Where do I fit?" "Maybe I don't fit at all?"

Life has a way of challenging us beyond belief sometimes, especially currently. Counselling can provide a safe space to process some of these challenges. I have experience of supporting people with issues ranging from Hate Crime to Domestic Abuse. As a disabled mixed-race mother, I have been through a lot in life, even had to access counselling myself occasionally. I have an interest in counselling disabled people coming to terms with factors such as culture and race; as I do believe counselling should be made accessible for all. So, I aim to provide a non-judgemental and culturally sensitive space at all times.

Thank you for checking out my profile. I work mainly with adults and have lengthy experience across a range of issues. Many clients believe that there is something wrong with them or that they are somehow to blame for their circumstances. Most people have more than one issue to work on as often many issues have built up before help is accessed. When clients first engage in counselling they may not be sure what their needs are or what goals they may have, they simply want to feel better. The first step on this journey is to identify the issues that impact negatively and work on them in order to enable further steps forward.

When relationships (business, family or personal) are troubled, we can feel anxious or depressed. Whether its lack of, ending of, difficulties with or changes in relationships, at work or home, our need for human closeness both brings pleasure and causes problems. Maybe change is driven by others, maybe you need something to change but don't know the best way to go about it. Perhaps you’re finding that you’re stuck in a destructive communication pattern and feel like you’re going round in circles. Maybe you don’t really know what you want, but would like to find out. I can help.

It can be exceptionally tough to start looking for therapy, and I'm proud of you for doing so today. As both a practicing therapist and as someone who has healed and grown in therapy myself, I know how it feels to be in both chairs in the therapy office. If you are looking for somewhere to create meaning in your life, you are feeling lost or hopeless, or you are seeking emotional support, please get in touch. I’m offering therapy exclusively through Skype, Zoom, and by phone, depending on your preference. While I plan to be back in the office to see people face-to-face when it is safe to do so, I am also excited to see you online!

One of the things I love about EMDR is that it puts you, the client, in control, (something we may not have had very much of when our traumas were taking place). EMDR does not delete memories but simply changes the way painful memories are stored, so that when we think about them, they no longer trigger negative emotions or sensations. As my mother once said, you can go around it, under it or over it but at some point, you must go through it. I wish you strength and healing on your journey.

How can I find a therapist in County Durham?
Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
