Do you regularly find yourself overwhelmed by the stresses and struggles in your life? Do you ask yourself, will I ever be 'better' or 'normal' (what is normal, I hear you say) how do you experience 'yourself' are you happy with who you are, or would you like to change? Are there people in your life whose behaviour towards you is overwhelming or disruptive, do you find it hard to say 'no' to these individuals? Are you anxious or worried about the future, or even the present and how you are coping with life? If this is you, I believe I can help, and work with you to turn things around and give you the tools to change.

My passion is to work with clients that want to expand and understand themselves, to deepen and explore their relationship to life, to themselves, their bodies and to others so that they can live and be in healthy and creative relationships, and live a good life ultimately. Maybe a life experience has been traumatic, maybe you have encountered a relationship problem at work or with friends or family, stress, depression or anxiety is crippling your life energy. Whatever your experience is, we can explore your issues with deeper reflection and enquiry, so that new possibilities, awareness, trust and choices can emerge.

Hi, my name is Laura and I started my practice in 2014. My passion is helping people who suffer with depression and anxiety, having personal experience with both. I enjoy finding new and creative ways of helping people to find their happiness and be at one with themselves. We are all different and as such all need a different approach, we are not broken and certainly do not need fixing. We can all at some point need someone to talk to about an imbalance in our lives and by using various techniques proven to be effective you will be able to find that balance and achieve the life you want to live not only now but also in the future.

Therapy is time set aside by you and the therapist to look at what has brought you to therapy. This might include talking about life events (past and present), feelings, emotions, relationships, ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour. Resilience isn’t about never falling over. It’s about knowing what do to when we do fall over and how we get back up again. I won’t judge you or criticise you.  I work with the uniqueness of each individual client and endeavour to offer a relationship in which you feel heard, accepted, safe and valued.  And collaboratively we will work to make positive changes in your life.

Sometimes we struggle with things in our lives that we don't feel we can (or want to) talk to those closest to us about. Sometimes we feel lost, ashamed or want to gain more insight into something. This is where seeing a therapist can help you.

The experience of coming for therapy is an opportunity for you to discover for the first (or subsequent) time in life that you can let go of all the judgements, the fear and hesitation, and begin to talk about what is bothering you. We become wounded within a sense of connectedness - in families, relationships, friendships and society - and paradoxically it is within a sense of connectedness that we can begin to heal. Healing the emotional brain takes time, but it is a creative and deeply fulfilling process that brings wonderful gifts with itself. I help my clients to begin to feel more balanced and calm within their mind and body.

You can follow me on all social media at "DrBrowning Sleep".
If you struggle to fall a sleep, can't stay a sleep, wake up too early or wake up feeling unrefreshed, then I can help you. I studied insomnia at the University of Oxford and started helping people with their sleeping problems at Trouble Sleeping in 2006 with CBT-I. I take a thorough medical and sleep history to discover why you aren't sleeping well, and then I suggest specific tailored cognitive and behavioural changes to help you to overcome your sleep issues. I am also the author of the self-help sleep book, Navigating Sleeplessness.

Talking to someone who really hears and understands you can be the first step of the journey towards positive change. Maybe you're feeling low and don't know why? Maybe you are trying to overcome big life events and everything has changed around you and you need some support? Perhaps you just don't know why you can't sleep, or why your tears surprise you and you want to know more? The good news is that Gestalt counselling can help.

I work with a wide range of client challenges, including depression, generalised anxiety, eating disorders, social anxiety, low self-esteem, panic attacks, PTSD, agoraphobia, specific phobias obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-harm, addiction, body dysmorphia, personality disorders, stress management, sleep difficulties and pain management.
Warmth, empathy, non-judgemental acceptance, scientific rigour and humour are at the heart of my approach to therapy. I follow core CBT traditions which put the client and therapist on an equal footing in a collaborative partnership, with the client as the authoritative expert in themselves. I aim to debunk and demystify, strip out jargon, and explain transparently how I work. CBT aims to give clients a therapeutic fishing rod, not just a fish, so that clients are helped to become CBT experts, their own therapists for the future. Therapy can be challenging, but more often it should be healing, uplifting, enriching and fun.

Back in the nineties when I went to my first counselling session when it seemed the only option left that I could face. In the UK back then ‘therapy’ was almost taboo and I was scared to tell a soul. Thank goodness I quickly felt safe enough to confide in my counsellor and to share with her my deepest fears for my sanity, my marriage, my high pressure job and indeed, my future (if there was to be one). I can’t remember too much about those sessions now but I always felt better just for having shared. Nowadays through counselling I help people to find and to love their inner selves, to handle whatever life throws at them and to grow.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
