My name is Karen and I am a qualified therapeutic counsellor. I imagine you are here because something in your life is troubling you, holding you back and preventing you from feeling secure, happy and fulfilled. Please be reassured that it is perfectly normal at certain points in our life to face difficulties that can leave us feeling distressed, out of control and overwhelmed, resulting in us suffering mentally, emotionally and physically. If you notice recurring patterns in anxiety, burnout, relationships, or self-pressure that no longer feel sustainable, therapy can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface.
I offer thoughtful, collaborative therapy focused on understanding patterns rather than diagnosing or fixing you. Together we explore how coping strategies developed, what maintains current difficulties, and how insight can support meaningful change. My approach is calm, reflective, and grounded in taking your experience seriously.

I work with individuals and couples who may be experiencing relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, overwhelm, low self-esteem, grief, and the emotional impact of major life changes including miscarriage and loss.
I provide a space for you to speak freely without shame or guilt. Sessions are shaped around you and what you need in that moment; some sessions may focus on talking and processing and others may be more practical or reflective. I will also do more than just smile and nod, I’ll also offer thoughtful reflections and gentle challenge where appropriate.

Many clients, with no prior knowledge of counselling, believe that the counsellor will sort their problems out for them. I will help you to explore your own issues, feelings, beliefs, behaviour, and worldview, so you can become more self-aware and achieve greater independence. Hi, my name is Alec, and it is a pleasure to meet you. I understand that seeking counselling or therapy can be a deeply personal experience and it can be difficult to take that first step. For this reason, I strive to offer clients a safe, friendly, and compassionate space to explore their difficulties while they learn about themselves and find healthier alternative ways to live their lives. I do not give advice and fully believe you are the expert on how to be you. However, no matter what your difficulty maybe I can offer you empathy, understanding and support as we work together. If you are seeking change, therapy may be helpful.

Life problems are most often programmed into and manifested in our relationships with ourselves, with others and the world around us. Our early social networks, our personalities, and our environments interact to influence how we view & experience life in the present day and how we habitually respond to it. How we grew up and our world as adults sometimes unknowingly constrain how we can think, feel, and cope with life. My treatment approach aims to give you freedom to live with more purpose, fulfilment, choice to make new decisions, and self-understanding and mastery moving forward.

Clients often come to me because they want to:
Feel less overwhelmed by anxiety.
I believe every person has an innate capacity for growth, healing, and change.
Sometimes life experiences, relationships, stress, or difficult circumstances can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves.
Therapy offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the values, strengths, and wisdom that have always been there, even if they feel difficult to access right now.
My role is not to tell you who you should become. It is to walk alongside you with curiosity, compassion, and evidence-informed practice as you discover what meaningful change looks like for you.

I believe we are all susceptible, at some point in our lives, to feeling overwhelmed by what life can bring. Sometimes we encounter experiences that are hard for us to come to terms with leaving us in need of support, this may be in the form of a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, a job loss; any event that we struggle to comprehend and understand. Other times a series of events may have taken place that leave us feeling like we are walking under a big black cloud and fail to see a way forward. At times like this counselling can help.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
