I offer a safe, calm space that is empathic, authentic, and non-judgemental. I fundamentally work with a humanistic, relational approach, appreciating that each client is unique in their lived experience. I also use an integrative approach to psychotherapy, meaning I use more than one modality. For example, I integrate developmental approaches, as I align with the theories that our childhood experiences impact us into adulthood, our sense of who we are, and what we bring to our close relationships. This is often unconscious to our day-to-day awareness.

I am a BACP Accredited Psychotherapist & Counsellor specialising in loss, grief and trauma.
We all experience losses in life – not just when someone dies but when we lose anything that is important to us: our relationships, our dreams of having a family, our health, our home, our job, our independence, our pets, and our hopes or expectations. Often, we are able to grieve for those losses and adjust but sometimes we are left feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, angry, guilty, ashamed, withdrawn, or numb for many months or even years later. Adjusting to losses in life is not about ‘getting over’ them but about finding ways to live a life that includes them.

You might be holding it together all day - getting things done, showing up for others, and then falling apart when you finally stop. Your body stays tense, your mind won’t switch off, and sleep doesn’t bring the rest you need. You may feel jumpy, on edge, or disconnected from yourself and the people around you, without always knowing why.
I offer trauma-informed counselling and EMDR in Sheffield for adults experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, and the lasting impact of difficult or overwhelming experiences.

I’m Nicola, I work with individuals and couples trying to make sense of change in their lives. Change may be a natural part of human life, but it can be difficult to figure out what happens next when suddenly something new occurs. I hope to help people make sense of the emotional impact of life events and how they influence day to day emotions. Therapy gives you the time and place to process the difficult events in your life.

When overwhelmed by life’s difficulties, struggling with loss or suffering from anxiety, stress, and depression, people often have no one to turn to.
Grieving can be a very lonely experience and so I join my clients on their journey, listening with empathy, allowing them to be ‘heard’ as they work through their pain, and enabling them to find hope, purpose and happiness in life again. My support also covers loss associated with miscarriages, pets, relationships, jobs or roles and changes in later life.

Bereavement Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
