Anxiety Counselling in Dorridge
Whether you are grappling with anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, low self-esteem, or the repercussions of past trauma, I will collaborate with you at a pace that is both comfortable and respectful.
My name is Nina Brennan, a BACP member for 8 years.
In conjunction with my counselling practice, I have undertaken specialized training in trauma-informed care and domestic abuse. This training equips me with an understanding of the profound effects trauma and abuse can have on the mind, body, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. My practice prioritizes your safety, autonomy, collaboration, and empowerment. Rather than posing the question "What is wrong with you?", I endeavor to comprehend "What has transpired in your life?" and how your experiences may have influenced the challenges you encounter today.

I have experience in working with clients presenting with anxiety, panic disorder, depression, loss and bereavement issues, trauma and emotional dysregulation.
I believe I have had an unusual but a very fortunate life. My parents worked abroad and I grew up in India and Australia before being sent to boarding school at age 7. This experience taught me a lot about life, being independent and resilient. Despite my struggles with dyslexia and ADHD, I survived, and became a PE teacher, working in state and independent secondary schools before moving into Special Education. In all these positions I also held senior pastoral roles. My background has shown me the importance of building trust, encouraging open honest, communication, and creating, a safe, non-judgemental environment for clients.

I work with adults navigating anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and life transitions, often with people who are good at holding things together on the outside while quietly struggling on the inside.
I imagine you're here because something isn't quite right; maybe you've been carrying it for a while, or maybe it's recently come to the surface. Either way, you're looking for somewhere to put it down, and someone you can trust to help you make sense of it.
My approach is collaborative and active, I won't sit there in silence nodding!
We'll explore what's brought you here, but also the broader context: past experiences, patterns, significant relationships. Understanding the connections is usually where the real shifts happen.

Whether you’re looking for help with depression, anxiety, loss, or bereavement; or whether you’re struggling to change things that are causing problems in your life, such as setting boundaries, communicating yourself, addictions, or disordered eating patterns, I offer a range of counselling and psychotherapy services that can help you work through this distress.
This may involve working on how you treat yourself or talk to yourself, how you suppress your emotions or express yourself in less than helpful ways. It may involve working on what prevents you from setting boundaries, or knowing what you want in the first place. And, ultimately, it may lead to working on how you feel about yourself.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
