Neuro-Linguistic (NLP) Counselling in Dorchester
Hi, I'm Nicky
It can be incredibly hard to try to figure it all out on your own.
Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, or are exhausted from navigating this world, these feelings are often the result of a constant clash between your inner world and the world around you.
My practice is inspired by the concept of a ‘Pensieve‘ – the kind of space where you can put the world on hold for a while and work through what is troubling you from a fresh perspective. Having a space to offload makes it easier to gain new insights and find ways forward that work for you.

Are you feeling anxious,
overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns you can’t seem to shift no matter how much you try to think your way through them?
Understanding can help, but it doesn’t always change how things feel day to day.
You may have already tried to work things through on your own, but still feel stuck.
In our work, we look at the patterns behind how you feel. Not just why they’re there, but how they continue to affect you.
Talking therapy can help you explore and make sense of your experience. I also draw on CBT and EMDR, which work more directly with patterns, behaviours, and past experiences.

My own experience of therapy taught me that real change begins when we feel safe enough to open and trust. I know how hard that can be—especially after heartbreak, loss, or years of self-doubt. I work with clients who want to heal emotional wounds, reconnect with themselves, and build relationships that feel secure and alive. My approach blends counselling, mind–body awareness, and practical tools to help you feel grounded, confident, and more at peace within yourself.

Counselling can help bring positivity and enjoyment to situations which may currently feel negative and depressing. Counselling can help to clarify emotional thoughts and processes around troubling situations, then can use that clarity to improve emotional situations. I have extensive experience with assisting clients with gambling problems, which is a learned problem habit.

You might feel weighed down by shame, guilt, or the sense that you’re never enough. Perhaps this shows up as anxiety, overthinking, exhaustion, or repeating painful relationship patterns. You may notice yourself stuck in cycles of burnout, intrusive thoughts, or emotional numbness, wondering why you can’t just “move on.” Deep down you may long for relief, self-trust, and the freedom to live more fully, but trying to explore this alone possibly feels overwhelming. Ideally, you'd want a space where you don’t have to carry it all by yourself.

My ideal client is one of complexity; I plan on to enrol onto a Doctorate becoming a counselling psychologist. I am a qualified counsellor and my knowledge base started 15 years ago when I fell ill. I have had an eventful life, including heart problems, strokes and many other issues. Through therapies, self help and determination I am happy with my life and I would love to share my knowledge. I have specialised in complex bereavement over the past 6 years seeing clients face to face and supporting them through the hard times. There is a need for more LGBT counsellors that understand and help.

I’m Karen Janas, an integrative counsellor working with adults, couples, and young people experiencing a wide range of emotional and relational difficulties. You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or exhausted, perhaps holding everything together for others while inside you feel unheard or stuck in patterns you don’t fully understand. You might be living with low mood or depression, navigating burnout, grief, menopause, or struggling with difficult relationships, including your relationship with food or with yourself. Life may feel more about surviving than living, and you’re tired of carrying it all alone.

Or are you looking for someone who will listen and be non judgemental and to whom you can talk in confidence about issues that are bothering you that would be difficult to share with friends or family members? Your feelings may be related to a bereavement or loss, the effects of abuse, relationship issues, or a major life change or may be related to something unresolved from the past. You may also be seeking support in setting goals and moving on in a positive way. These (and others) are areas in which I am well experienced.

Neuro-Linguistic (NLP) Counsellors
How does neuro-linguistic programming work?
A therapist using Neuro-linguistic programming might start by building a strong rapport and gathering information about the client’s objectives and any problem areas. Then the NLP therapist will employ NLP techniques to guide their client toward healthier thoughts and behaviours. Clients will learn how to better manage their moods and hone their communication skills. NLP will conclude with the therapist and client making a plan for how to integrate the positive changes into their daily life in the future.
What are some techniques used in neuro-linguistic programming?
NLP therapists often employ anchoring, so the client begins to automatically associate their trigger with a healthier response. Clients also learn how to reframe a situation to change the way they react to it for the better, and how to replace the negative beliefs that are holding them back. Many NLP clients practice visualisation or forming a mental image of themselves attaining their goals. Every NLP therapist will have their own preferred approach with specific techniques that they have found to be helpful for their clients.
How long does neuro-linguistic programming take?
Since neuro-linguistic programming is not regulated, the length of treatment can vary greatly. Some therapists may only use NLP in a single session, while others may employ it over the course of weeks, months, or even years. It depends greatly on the type and severity of the problem being treated, as well as the individual client’s response to NLP treatment.
Is neuro-linguistic programming evidence-based?
While some people may find neuro-linguistic programming helpful, either in therapy or in their career or personal development, the science behind this approach is inconclusive. Most of the available studies are small in scale and have produced mixed results, and the commercial nature of NLP lends itself to conflicts of interest. More research is needed. In the meantime, practitioners must use their best judgment of whether NLP techniques will be helpful in meeting their clients’ individual needs.
