This is about you and I'm here to listen sensitively as we work together in a confidential setting so you feel you can talk openly and freely. It is about a therapeutic relationship as I offer emotional warmth and respect, encouraging you to explore what has brought you to counselling. To offer an empathic understanding is about you knowing I am on the journey with you making sense of what is happening but being guided by your direction of what is important for you to bring to the session.

You may appear to be coping on the outside while feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally exhausted inside. I work with adults experiencing trauma, emotional neglect, addiction, shame, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. These patterns are often survival strategies that can be understood and gently changed in therapy.

In 2015, when I qualified as a psychotherapist, I remember saying to my tutor, "I believe in all the theories. What kind of therapist do I need to become?" His answer was simple: "Integrative." He explained that being an integrative therapist wasn't simply about learning different theories. It meant continually exploring my own life, remaining open to new research and never stopping learning. I committed to that journey because I believed something very strongly: How could I ask clients to look deeply at themselves if I wasn't willing to do the same?

I am a psychosexual therapist and I work with both individuals and couples, helping them to understand how their physical, social and emotional factors can impact on their sexual difficulties. Some people can find talking about their sexual issues difficult especially with their partners. I will make you feel more comfortable when sharing and expressing your sexual difficulty. You may also have some mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence around your sexual issues. Talking and resolving your mental health will help with your sexual issues.

I work with adults who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally drained. Many clients come to therapy feeling anxious, low, stressed, or frustrated with patterns they can’t seem to change. Some are carrying past experiences that still affect them today, while others struggle with emotional regulation, relationships, anger, or self-confidence. People often want a safe, down-to-earth space where they can talk openly and make sense of what’s going on. My aim is to help clients feel heard, understand their emotions, and build practical tools they can use in everyday life. I work collaboratively, at your pace.

I believe that when people connect, change can happen. I work face to face in centre of York or online across the UK. If your experiences are weighing on you and you feel working with someone neutral may help I could be a good fit for you. I work in a trauma informed way; treating your past experiences with compassion and care, and together we can work towards how you would like your life to be now; safe and connected. Maybe life just isn't how you would like it to be and you're trying to make sense of past experiences on your own. I may be able to help. I am a tutor at Leeds University and I hold two places for trainee therapists.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
