Many people know that they want to speak with a therapist, but are a afraid that their 'stuff' might shock or hurt them. PLEASE trust me - I do understand how awful life can be, how cruel some people can be, how we do things to survive that we wish we hadn't. Try me - you will find that I am not going to be shocked or hurt, and that I can listen with understanding, warmth and without judgment, for as long as it takes to put your demons to rest and move on with your life.

I will help you to understand your feelings, thoughts & what you are experiencing in a non-judgemental & confidential space. Through the re-examination of the roles you might be adopting in relation to yourself & others, your choices & beliefs, a new perspective & understanding into yourself & your difficulties can be reached. This new understanding will help new choices and possibilities to arise & a sense of clarity to emerge. I will provide a space in which you can truly be yourself, without fear of expectation.

I also work with EMDR and trauma-informed approaches, which can help process distressing or traumatic experiences and reduce their ongoing impact. I offer a calm, confidential and non-judgmental space in which to talk over whatever's troubling you, either as an individual (£70) or as a couple (£85). I am also a clinical supervisor (£60). Sometimes, people think their problems aren't big enough to warrant counselling, or are too big for someone else to cope with, but if there’s something that’s getting in the way of you leading your life the way you want, we can look at that together. Or there may be one particular event in your life which is affecting you which we can explore so you get a good understanding of how it affects you, and the changes you might like to make.

I have experience of working with trauma, particularly historic or recent/current sexual abuse, sexual assault and domestic abuse.
I believe we all find life challenging at one time or another. We all experience relationships and life events that affect how we feel about ourselves, the world around us and our place in that world. By making sense of the difficult thoughts, feelings and stuck patterns of behaviour that grow out of these experiences I believe we can start to see how we’d like things to be different and how to move towards change. This is where counselling can help. Together we can create a space where you feel supported to explore whatever you need, to gain insights that it might be hard to reach alone.

I work online and over the phone with clients struggling with either the short-term or long-term impact of abuse, loss, trauma and gaslighting. The wounds caused by these experiences can remain forever open, derailing our lives and preventing us from moving on to find happiness and fulfilment. I accompany my clients as they journey back into the hurt of the past to untangle the bonds that anchor them there and teach them how to build and maintain healthy boundaries in relationships so they can look forward to a brighter and happier future.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
