I am a BABCP accredited CBT therapist, and an EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner.
CBT and EMDR have a good evidence base in helping people with trauma related symptoms/PTSD/traumatic bereavement, or where people need to process painful memories from the past. Both are also great for treating anxiety - it is daunting to leave your comfort zone, but the results of less fear/anxiety, and higher confidence in yourself are worth it!

I typically draw on psychotherapeutic ways of working, EMDR, meditation and presence practices, movement and coaching.
Hi I am Amy. I work with people who are on or ready to begin a journey of deep self-discovery. Who seek to be their own source of love and support even if this feels impossible to imagine. Whose brave hearts are open to taking radical responsibility for themselves and the unfolding of their lives even when the path to this feels novel and uncertain. I offer a compassionate, grounded space where clients can reconnect with their courage and inner wisdom. Together, we go deep into intentional, grounded work that is underpinned by effective psychological approaches along with my clinical experience of over 17 years.

I am very mindful of how difficult finding a therapist that you feel comfortable with can be and I offer a calm and compassionate approach, while we gain an understanding of your concerns. My primary therapeutic method is ‘psychodynamic’ but I draw on a variety of ‘models’ to help in whichever way is appropriate: These may include CBT or EFT. Once we have revealed, talked-through and understood the root causes of your concerns we can examine ways of dealing with the issues and moving forward. This is a very much a joint effort where we work together to help you through the troublesome episode and out the other side.

Alongside CBT, I also use EMDR, ACT, CFT, and relational approaches in my work.
Sessions can be online or face to face near Norwich (or a mixture of both). We would start with a period of getting to know you and understand what has brought you to therapy. From there, we’ll work together to develop a plan which fits your needs and goals. I offer both brief and longer-term therapy so we can tailor our plan to suit what you can commit to.

Many of my clients come to me feeling emotionally overwhelmed, stuck in overthinking, anxiety, burnout, grief, or patterns they don’t fully understand. Often they’ve spent years holding everything together for everyone else while struggling internally. Some have tried traditional approaches before but are looking for something that feels more personal, flexible, and human. I work with people who want to better understand themselves, process difficult experiences, calm the nervous system, and reconnect with who they are underneath survival mode.

I use evidence-based talking and somatic therapies, mainly drawing from the following: Schema Therapy, EMDR, Compassion Focused Therapy, Narrative and Systemic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
I believe that mental health difficulties are meaningful and understandable reactions to painful life events and situations, and so these are best treated with compassion, curiosity and respect. In this way, we may not only overcome problems, but gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our values, leading to a more balanced, fulfilling and enjoyable life. With a warm, caring approach to creating safe and reflective relationships, I can offer brief, focused therapy to build coping skills and overcome specific problems, or more in-depth work to build insight and release ingrained ways of being.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
