CBT has a strong evidence base for many different emotional problems including depression, anxiety, insomnia , PTSD, OCD, and many others.
My name is Kezia, I am a BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Registered Mental Health Nurse. In addition to CBT, I also offer Compassion Focused and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) based sessions. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life. One of my particular interests is working with women experiencing pre/post natal mental health difficulties. I developed this interest after embarking on my own journey into parenthood. I am also especially interested in working with people who experience high levels of self-criticism (including perfectionism) or people who struggle with their self esteem.

Therapy can help us to manage our lives and our relationships better, it can lead to more fulfilling relationships and a renewed sense of aliveness. Learning how to manage symptoms such as overthinking, insomnia , anxiety, depression, lack of energy, or an enduring sense of helplessness and despair, can lead to renewed energy and a greater sense of freedom in our lives. In my sessions I often use teaching, in order to help make sense of and understand why you might be feeling the way you do and to help you learn ways to make changes in order to better manage those feelings.

Hi, I'm looking forward to hearing from you! I want to hear your concerns and support you to work towards the things that are most important in your life. I feel that therapy should happen in a friendly, nurturing space in which you feel safe and comfortable to bring anything you want to talk about and work on. I usually suggest exercises and other resources to complete in between sessions in order to keep the work progressing.

Life can be tough and many issues can arise which lead us to feel challenged in our day to day life. You may have suffered major life events which have left you feeling traumatised or uncertain of yourself with regards to your sense of self or identity; maybe you have arrived at a place in your life when you crave some space to reflect and clarify your feelings as you look towards your future. It may be tricky at this stage to define your motivation for seeking psychotherapy at this time and to know exactly what you feel you need - you may just sense you need 'something'.

Congratulations on making the first brave step of reaching out for support. This can feel like a big step into the unknown, which is why I work in ways to make sure you feel comfortable and safe in the sessions. I have a therapeutic interest in early years relationships which are formed with parents / care givers. I understand individuals make meaning of their experiences and so my philosophical approach steers away from the role of ‘expert’ towards an equal relationship with clients.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
