I can offer you a calm, compassionate, non-judgemental space to explore whatever's on your mind or in your heart. I believe that you deserve an approach to therapy that's truly as unique as you are, so I never use 'a one size fits all' approach. Instead, I draw from a wide array of tools, approaches and theories - always working alongside you to find out what's best for you. Whether there's a certain event that's brought you to counselling, or things just don't feel 'quite right', counselling can help.

I work with everyone as an individual and being an integrative therapists means i can use tools from CBT, Psychodynamic theory and humanistic therapy to create the best plan that suits them.
Life is busy, difficult and unpredictable. Running around after everyone else, putting yourself last, feelings of tiredness, overwhelmed or unappreciated. On top of those already stressful days you can be hit with something unexpected such as illness or a bereavement. It is ok to not be ok and sometimes help is needed to get through those extra difficulties that life likes to throw your way. Counselling with me is somewhere safe you can go to express yourself without judgement, have your feelings validated. you won't be told to get over. Clients are treated respectfully and with Empathy.

Hi there, I'm Richard, an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. I blend different therapeutic approaches to suit your needs, combining techniques from person-centred, attachment-based, and cognitive-behavioural therapy with trauma-informed soothing and mindfulness to help heal trauma. Many of us experience anxiety, difficult relationships, self-doubt, or feeling overwhelmed without fully understanding why. It's a completely natural part of being human. Perhaps you notice patterns but wonder where they began. Understanding can help us heal emotional pain, gain confidence and reconnect to our life in a healthy, meaningful way

You may appear to be coping on the outside while feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected on the inside. Perhaps you’ve been holding a lot on your own, feeling stuck, or unsure where to begin. Therapy can offer a space to pause, breathe, and make sense of what’s been weighing on you. I offer a calm, supportive environment where you can feel heard and understood, and explore things at your own pace.

Life is challenging and can feel like you’re on a hamster wheel of pressure, ‘have-tos’ and obligations. The more you do, the more the wheel spins, and the faster you descend into overwhelm, stress, anxiety, and burn-out. I can support you to overcome these challenges, as well as relational trauma and abuse, racial trauma, grief, low self-esteem, and life transitions. I offer a compassionate space for us to explore what you have experienced in life, how these experiences shaped you, and how you can make comfortable changes that support you to live a joyful, balanced, inspired, and fulfilling life.

Do you feel troubled by something? Does something feel 'off'? Would you like to have more of an understanding of yourself or the issues you are having? Would you like to feel more empowered? Imagine being in a safe space where these, and any other issues can be discussed. It takes courage to reach out but please know there will be no judgement and your thoughts and feelings will be respected throughout.

My goal is to help and support you to develop healthy coping strategies, become more self-aware and experience personal growth. I offer tailor-made therapy that is as individual and unique as you are. Therapy shouldn't just benefit you whilst in session but continue to support you outside of the sessions too. This is achieved by using a combination of talking therapy, worksheets and practical exercises. You can always call me if you are struggling in between sessions. Do you invest more time, love and attention in others than yourself? Then perhaps it is time for you to invest in yourself.

Time to address something in your life? Perhaps you’ve been depressed or anxious, fearful, grieving or stuck. Maybe you’re struggling with relationships or something has happened in your life that you need to deal with and understand. Or it might be that you just have a nagging sense that something isn’t quite right and it’s finally time to work out who you are and what you want from life. I’ll listen to you carefully to understand why you’ve chosen to come to therapy and maybe even help clarify what it is that is troubling you. My aim will be to help you feel safe, valued, accepted and understood.

My work is grounded in a relational, psychodynamic approach where we explore how past experiences may continue to shape how you feel about yourself and others today.
I work integratively and draw on different approaches where helpful. I have particular experience supporting individuals with eating disorders and body image difficulties and previously worked as a counselling service lead within an eating disorder service. We can explore both internal and behavioural aspects of difficulties with food and body image.

You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or affected by past experiences that still shape how you feel and relate today. Perhaps your relationship feels strained, communication has become difficult, or you’re navigating the emotional and physical changes of menopause. You might feel stuck in familiar patterns, disconnected from yourself or others, or unsure how to move forward. You’re looking for a supportive space to talk openly, feel understood, and begin making sense of what’s happening for you — on your own or together with your partner.

I am a fully qualified psychotherapist with specific training in Psychodynamic and Person-Centred therapy.
It is amazing how much being listened to helps. Sometimes it is enough to merely let go of the words that have built up inside you over the years. We are all built differently, and a significant amount of my clients have been a little daunted by the thought of talking about themselves for this long, at least at the beginning. I have a patient and relaxed style that my clients tell me help them take things at their own pace. I know that the only ‘right’ way of ‘doing therapy’ is the way that makes you feel safe. No two of my clients are the same therefore I have adopted a style that provides bespoke sessions to each individual.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
