In working with clients affected by domestic abuse I have a specialised understanding of relationship dynamics, this helps me work with clients who are experiencing difficulties in their relationships whether a partner or family member, when a client brings issues around developing a new relationship or when they are wishing to reconnect with family members.
My name is Kim Byng, I am a fully qualified counsellor working in Derby. I have a background in working with clients affected by domestic violence (male and female) and also with victims of crime. I work with adult clients around relationship and attachment issues, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, loss, trauma, self harm, identifying patterns of relating to others, new relationships and personal growth. As an integrative therapist, I am relational in my approach, this style places great emphasis on the relationship between the client and the therapist. I have personal experience in sexual, physical, emotional and mental abuse; divorce; living with a narcissist; step-parenting; addiction and PTSD.

I have focused extensively on assisting individuals in overcoming eating disorders, emphasizing the crucial initial steps towards recovery. Additionally, my experience extends to working with survivors of sexual trauma and assault at SARAC, where I provided a safe haven for healing. I've addressed a spectrum of mental health challenges, including depression, phobias, and relationship issues. My journey in the field of mental health began with a Bachelor's in Psychology, which laid the foundation for my subsequent specialized training.

I strongly believe that the client knows themselves best, therefore I listen not to diagnose, but to understand you and how you came to be. I appreciate everyone wants to be happy, but the idea of happiness will look different to everyone - to some, it may be having better relationships with their loved ones, to others, it may be excelling at their career, and others may want to have a better relationship with themselves. Together, we can work through the barriers like anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, or anything else. Whatever it is that your happiness looks like, I want to help you get there.

I know all too well (believe me!) that there’s often no ‘quick fix’ to some of life’s curveballs, but with patience and regular therapy sessions I can help you reach a place of emotional regulation, to learn about and meet your ‘wants and needs’ in order to feel a sense of meaningful connection both with yourself, and others.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
