I have experience in working with adults and young people 16+ from all cultural backgrounds with a diverse range of mental health issues such as trauma, anxiety , depression, eating disorders and low self - esteem.
People often believe therapy is only needed when you are in 'crisis' or there has been a 'critical incident'. However, therapy can be accessed at any point in our lives such as when we want to learn more about ourselves or to build better relationships. Therapy is a safe place to work on self - awareness, self - reflection and/or life's struggles. If you are going through something that seems too overwhelming or difficult, therapy can be a tool to offer support.

Over the years I have studied managing anxiety and building self esteem , and am well placed to support clients whose lives are impacted by living with anxiety . I understand how difficult it can be to take the first step into therapy , which in itself can increase the physical and psychological responses and increase fear of not being able to cope . I would hope that a client would be able to achieve their goals to manage their anxiety and live life more freely , being able to yes to things more often and live life more fearlessly. My work has also been to support bereavement, where therapy aims to make adjustments for life now .

I strongly believe that the client knows themselves best, therefore I listen not to diagnose, but to understand you and how you came to be. I appreciate everyone wants to be happy, but the idea of happiness will look different to everyone - to some, it may be having better relationships with their loved ones, to others, it may be excelling at their career, and others may want to have a better relationship with themselves. Together, we can work through the barriers like anxiety , depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, or anything else. Whatever it is that your happiness looks like, I want to help you get there.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
