Psychotherapy is a word that derives from ancient Greek and means 'liberating the soul'. Our sessions together are an opportunity to talk about concerns and issues that might be difficult to share with family and friends and that might feel overwhelming to deal with alone. It is a chance to feel supported, gain insight and make positive changes, in a way which respects your values, personal resources and freedom of choice.

I’m a strong believer that, in the words of Nelson Mandela “there is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living” – yet sometimes life is really quite tough and we find ourselves struggling and this ideal seems far from our reality. You may find yourself feeling emotionally overwhelmed, anxious or lonely. Or, you may have been struggling for some time and haven’t found the motivation to address it but now that struggle may be feeling a little bigger.

You don’t have to be in crisis to come to therapy. Maybe you’re functioning on the surface, but something feels off — you’re anxious, angry, stuck, or simply not yourself. I work with thoughtful adults who often carry complex histories: early relationships trauma, disrupted attachment patterns, difficulties with life's changes or a quiet sense that something isn’t quite right. My primary approach is rooted in attachment theory and the idea that our adult relationships are shaped by our earliest bonds. With that in mind, I offer a space to think clearly, feel safe, and begin to understand yourself and your relationships in a new way.

Perhaps you are looking for help to find your bearings while going through a time of crisis and/or you who wish to examine your life more fully to address issues that have affected you over time. With the help of therapy, you can start understanding your inner world and thought patterns more clearly and remove the feelings of anxiety and worry from your mind. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy aims to go deep into your emotions, understanding how your early life has formed strategies that might contribute to unhelpful patterns in adulthood with the aim of gradually removing distress, helping you to live a fuller life.

In an ideal world, we would feel unconditionally loved and accepted, free to be openly ourselves, able to develop and maintain meaningful relationships and eager to explore the world around us. The reality is that many of us have had challenging experiences in our lives and we carry inner hurts and wounds. You may be experiencing overwhelming anxiety and/or panic attacks. You may feel depressed, stressed, worthless or have suicidal thoughts. Feelings of anger, sadness, grief, tearfulness or loneliness may be unbearable, perhaps due to bereavement, trauma, abuse or family issues. Maybe you struggle with low self-esteem.

Sometimes it looks like you’re managing just fine — you’re capable, driven, and the one others turn to for support. But inside, you might feel anxious, exhausted, or unsure of what’s next. Maybe you’re carrying unspoken grief, moving through burnout, or simply questioning whether the life you’ve built still fits. Many of my clients work in high-pressure environments — leaders, founders, creatives, and high-profile professionals — but you don’t need a big title to belong here. If you carry a lot for others and rarely put yourself first, this space is for you.

I see individuals who feel stuck for a whole variety of reasons. Whatever brings you to therapy, my specialty is a deep exploration of all the factors that are holding you back. To do this, I develop long-term supportive relationships with my clients and work in an open-ended way, rather than just “fixing” the immediate problem. I use my expertise in psychotherapeutic theory, alongside a caring approach, to help people address their challenges at a level they can’t reach on their own.

It takes courage to seek support, therefore I offer a confidential space where you can safely explore the particular situation you find yourself in. This may mean you come with a specific problem, anxiety, crisis or perhaps a vaguer sense that something doesn't feel quite right for you. Everyday life does not always leave room for reflection or questioning, therefore carving out a regular space to wonder, alongside another person about yourself, can be a powerful way to uncover how past experiences and relationships may have impacted the way things are now, whilst identifying how you would like things to be in the future.

I have worked with clients through Relate since 1995, first of all only with couples and adult individuals and then since 2013 with Young People aged 10 to 18 through a contract with CAHMS. The couple work has included working with divorce and separation, affairs, extended family issues, parenting, illness, work pressures, communication issues and sexual problems. Clients might start with a clear agenda or we might spend some time establishing the focus of the therapy as it develops. Amongst other things, the work through CAMHS has covered anxiety, suicidal ideation, family issues, sexuality and transgender issues.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
