When many of my clients come to see me, they feel like there’s no hope – they’re finding it very difficult to cope with life. You might feel isolated, because you’ve been through so much but you feel like you can’t talk about it. Things might feel hopeless, and you may not be able to imagine what else to do. Having to hide how you feel can make you feel alone, and unheard. Living with high levels of distress, anxiety or low mood can be unbearable. I can support you in taking steps to make life feel easier. I offer a no-cost initial 30-minute consultation either face-to-face or online. You can book this via my website or contact me.

Hello, I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, CAT Therapist and Coach. I am passionate about working with people in the way that they find most helpful. We can all find ourselves at a point in our lives when things are not how we’d like them to be. We can be caught up in negative patterns, experience difficult symptoms (such as struggling with sleep or anxiety, feeling low or stressed) and have difficulties with our relationships, work or our health. We may have experienced something traumatic or stressful that we struggle to cope with or find ourselves caught up in a negative situation that we don’t seem to be able to escape.

If you are finding it hard to work your way through a difficult experience, or struggle to understand your part in painful or repeating experiences, then maybe counselling can help. For almost 20 years I've been offering sensitive listening, tuning in without judgment. This means I accept all of you, including those parts you are not proud of or that might cause you shame or pain or fear. Counselling offers you the opportunity to gain awareness and understanding about them, to increase confidence in your decision making and the freedom to choose afresh if need be.

I am LGBTQ+ affirmative, and I work compassionately and inclusively, understanding the importance of being heard and understood. Art Therapy is a non-judgemental, experimental space where art making and creative thinking can be used to play, explore and understand our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Sometimes it can be hard to know how to describe our experiences or how we feel, as there are not always the words to fit our narrative. Art has an incredible way of allowing us to explore our thoughts and feelings as we see or feel without judgement or shame.

The bravest thing we can do when things get hard is ask for help. I have been working with people going through crises ranging from depression and anxiety to relationship break down and trauma for the last 12 years and have had the privilege of seeing people find hope even in the midst of difficulty. I work in an integrative way, incorporating aspects of cognitive-behavioural therapy, person-centred approach and attachment theory to offer clients the tools that are most useful to them. I aim to give clients a safe and confidential space to explore the causes behind their difficulties, as well as working with them to find solutions.

Do you have concerns about your child’s emotional wellbeing? These challenges can be related to feelings of anxiety or low mood, or they may be behavioural challenges. When a young person experiences emotional distress, this can have a big impact on the relationships in your family, and on your day-to-day life. This can also lead to feelings of stress and exhaustion as a parent. Seeking Psychological support can be one way of understanding and navigating a way through these challenging times for your child and your family.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
