I am a BABCP accredited CBT therapist supporting adults with anxiety and depression.
I provide a safe and confidential space where you can begin to identify thinking, beliefs and behaviour patterns that may inadvertently have a role in keeping your problems going. I can help with low mood, depression and anxiety problems such as panic, worry and social anxiety. I have a particular interest in helping adults with OCD and health anxiety.

I work with clients struggling with anxiety, anger, shame, trauma, and struggles surrounding neurodiversity.
Hello, and welcome. I am so glad you have found your way here. My name is Laurie White-Bracken. I specialise in working with men & boys, and individuals with ADHD (both formally and self-diagnosed). This means that I often work around topics such as unworthiness, anger, shame, feeling misunderstood, injustice and overwhelm. That said, I do not limit my practice to anyone, and am always open to working with those who have the desire to find a more fulfilling, and peaceful life, and are at a point in their life where they are ready to do so.

I support people who have experiences of trauma, anxiety and low mood, who may be facing issues of emotional burnout, dysregulation, hypervigilance, or relational difficulties.
In addition to talk therapy, I draw on my training in therapeutic arts to create interventions that communicate to us through imagery and embodiment. This gives us greater opportunity to process difficult feelings and unmet needs through externalising problems to the page, or through tracking feelings within the body.

I am trained and qualified in helping clients with a variety of problems from depression and anxiety to Personality Disorders.
Clients generally come to me when they are struggling with some aspect of their emotions, thoughts or behaviour. My aim is to help my client with accepting or changing some aspect of these three areas. Every client comes with unique issues and from my seat I view the issues as one, "a block in the road to wellness". I am keenly aware that all clients come with individual goals and I am here to help. Many of my clients use the phrase “I just want to feel better". This is my hope for everyone who engages with me in therapy. Together we will unpack what this really means, and develop a plan of how to make it happen.

Clients contact me for many reasons: anxiety/stress with physical symptoms, past adverse experiences, rape, abuse, anger, loneliness, disturbing dreams or intruding images, life threatening or chronic health conditions, life-long disabilities, life crisis.
If you are a survivor of trauma, life-long adversity, or discrimination you may feel there is nowhere to go for support. I offer a therapeutic space of positive regard based on safety, trust and heart to explore experiences and feelings that are difficult to express - at times these are painful and upsetting but we may also find joy and hope.

Is life getting you down? Do you feel listened to and supported? Are you struggling to like yourself? Do you sometimes feel you may be acting against your own best interests? Do you wonder why, so much of the time, you feel unable to bring about lasting change in the ways you relate to other people, and to life generally? I believe that early life experiences are critical to the person we become. Some of those early experiences will work to our good, whilst others may be at the root of why we find ourselves struggling, often without realising it. Self-awareness is key.

I am an integrative counsellor specialising in eating disorders, as well as working with many other issues including self harm, anxiety, low moods, relationships, OCD & baby loss.
I strongly believe that, "a healer is someone who seeks to be the light she wishes she had in her darkest moments." I understand that taking the first steps towards counselling is not always easy. My own life has not been without struggles and my own experiences of personal counselling have helped shaped the type of counsellor I strive to be.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
