I help clients with issues such as suicide ideation, stress, low self-esteem, panic disorder, anxiety, illness, baby loss, relationships, work issues feeling sad and phobias.
It can seem like the hardest thing to do to access counselling, but it can be life changing if you take that first step. You may not be entirely clear on what you want but just have a feeling that things don't feel right and you have decided that you want to understand what, why and how to refocus and live the life you feel is best for you. Or perhaps you are very aware of a struggle with difficulties, which may already be formally diagnosed by another professional, and you want to regain some control instead of feeling that these issues take over. I can support people in achieving their goals wherever they are in their journey.

Over many years I have developed a particular specialist interest in working with bereavement, trauma and loss.
Humanistic counselling is a warm, client-focused approach to therapy that puts you at the centre of the process. It’s built on the belief that everyone has the capacity for personal growth and self-discovery when given the right support. I offer a safe space to explore your goals and will empower and support you to achieve them.

My specialism is bereavement, I am comfortable working with death, and I help my clients come to terms with life after loss.
The client is the most important person in a counselling relationship, my job is to help you feel valued, and understood so you also believe this. My ideal client will want to work towards processing their feelings, achieving their goals and be willing to work with me to make this happen. I like to work with clients that are struggling with making sense of life. Feeling unable to move on from past experiences, having that space and time to reflect and process things can make a huge difference. I enjoy cultivating an environment to help my clients work through life's challenges.

I work with indviduals and couples on a range of issues: Anxiety, depression, bereavement, problematic substance use, and relationships to name a few.
For most of my career I have worked in frontline services both as a case worker and then as a manager. I became frustrated at the limitations of my role and grew tired of the politics between organisations and services. I then trained as a counsellor to gain a deeper understanding of the problems that people were approaching me with. I qualified in 2019 in Person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy. I would describe my approach as relational. This means that I work with you in a collaborative way to understand your subjective experiencing of the world you inhabit.

I worked for over 20 years in the NHS in senior therapeutic roles and have considerable experience helping people with a wide range of psychological difficulties from addictions to anxiety, depression, bereavement and personality issues.
Life can generate brief periods of stress. Many people have also experienced early chronic adversity that has a lasting impact. Therapy can help with the healing from the impact of difficult experiences on the mind and our relationships. Understanding how you got to the point where you are seeking help can be a crucial step in making sense of the thoughts, feelings and relationship difficulties that are currently troubling. Then new ways forward can be developed and alternative approaches to living life can be explored.

I love working with people, getting to know you and hearing your story. I believe that we are all unique. One of the things I love most about my work is the privilege of seeing someone begin to thrive and to enjoy their life again. I love helping to find some inner calm, clarity of thought and to be practicing self compassion as part of their everyday lives. I work in a bespoke way, tailor making my approach to each person. However, that said, everyone's needs compassion and so a compassion focused therapy approach runs through all of my work. I am most definitely a human first and a psychologist second.

Waitlist for new clients
Topics around friendships, relationships and bullying, bereavement, self-confidence, and self-harm show up in both the stories and in the counselling room.
I am a young people’s counsellor, working with clients aged 13-30. We all experience life differently, not one person’s life is the same as another. You may be experiencing anxiety at school or work. Worrying about upcoming deadlines or exams. You may have uncertainty about who you are and feel or think negatively about yourself. You may be feeling burnout and want to build a good work/life balance. It can be hard to recognise and manage everything on our own. I can offer you a confidential, non-judgemental space to feel heard. Together we can identify your triggers and develop coping strategies to help you face your challenges.

Hi I'm Paula, thank you for taking the time to read my profile. Looking for a counsellor can be a daunting experience and finding the right counsellor for you is a very important decision. One of the most important parts is finding a counsellor you 'click' with. My approach to therapy is to be a calm, compassionate presence, down to earth but also practical. We often want practical tools and knowledge to help make changes or face life's ups and downs. I aim to help you learn about yourself, process how you feel, cope better and find new ways to move forward.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
