You might look like you’re coping—but inside, it feels different. You may overthink conversations, feel anxious without knowing why, or find yourself people-pleasing and struggling to say no. Sometimes something small shifts—and suddenly your body is flooded with urgency or emotion that feels hard to control. You might react more strongly than you’d like in relationships, then question yourself afterwards. This may connect to earlier experiences or trauma that still affects you now. And underneath it all, there may be a quieter, persistent question: Am I really good enough?

You may be feeling stuck in patterns of anxiety, overwhelm, or low mood, or noticing how past experiences continue to affect your relationships, emotions or sense of safety. Trauma can leave the nervous system feeling constantly on edge, disconnected or caught in responses that are hard to shift alone. Therapy can offer a space to slow down, gently understand what’s happening beneath the surface and begin to feel more grounded and supported within yourself.

As an NCPS qualified, accredited therapist I have many years experience of working with people living with trauma and inner conflict. Issues may vary from abuse, anxiety, disorders depression, grief, gender and sexuality, relationships, low self-esteem and PTSD. In particular, I have worked in depth with those suffering from eating disorders and those in alcohol/drug recovery. My work with young people in education has shown me how early trauma affects behaviours later in life and how patterns often repeat.

Movement Psychotherapy is grounded in the understanding that body and mind are inseparable — that our bodies hold experiences, feelings, and stories that words alone may not reach. Often people come curious about exploring a different way of working, one that includes the whole self — body, mind, emotion and lived experience. They may be navigating anxiety, trauma, difficulties with body image, life transitions, loss, feelings or experiences that feel hard to put into words. Many are drawn to finding meaning not only through talking, but through the body, movement, felt experience and creative expression.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
