Hi, I'm Sarah. I offer short and long-term counselling for adults. You might already have a clear sense of what you need, or you may not know yet. Both are completely okay. Sessions with me provide a non-judgemental, empathetic space where you are supported to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and to discover your own way forward. My professional and personal lived experience encompasses a range of issues, with particular focus on: anxiety; depression; grief; chronic illness; parenting/perinatal issues; relationship/family challenges; neurodivergence; school avoidance; low self esteem; and anger.

There is hope, even when you have experienced significant life trauma. Although it might not be possible to forget life's challenges completely, it is possible to manage them so you can live life again with the volume turned down on the past. My role is to facilitate a safe, supportive space where you can begin to heal from life's traumas and remember who you are. I value doing all I can to offer you an integrated approach assessing your past, present and future using counselling and psychological theories. As the client, the time we have will be entirely yours, as I assist and guide you to uncover the way forward.

I work with people who are willing to look deeply at their inner worlds and how they connect with the bigger picture. My preferred therapeutic model is IFS (Internal Family Systems). It can help us reestablish a sense of connectedness and perspective, inside and out.

I provide a safe, peaceful environment to explore the many issues clients bring. After you contact me, we will arrange a 50 minute face to face assessment. This gives us both an opportunity to assess if we are a ‘good fit’ and are happy to go ahead and work with each other. We will then find a suitable weekly time slot, and will start the process of weekly therapy, to be held at the same time every week. I am amenable to our sessions occasionally being conducted by video call if, for example, you have a job which requires travel away from the area. However, ideally this shouldn’t happen more than once every few months

You are probably feeling very upset, alone and confused, maybe even ashamed and wondering if counselling could help? Everyone who comes to therapy has a unique set of issues but the underlying need to share the distress and be understood, is true for everyone. If you are struggling with parenting, postnatal depression, miscarriage or your identity during a life transition, you are not alone. I have lots of experience working with women (and men) who are struggling with life and want to feel better than they currently do. I also help younger people and teens who may have self esteem issues, feel sad, anxious or be self harming.

I work with a wide range of diverse needs and people, but particularly those struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, poor self-esteem and the feeling that they are just not good enough. Many of the people I work with find themselves feeling constantly anxious - worrying about what other people think of them, trying to keep everyone happy or believing they are flawed and not good enough. They are often exhausted and frustrated that they can't find a way to break free from this.

I work with people who have often felt misunderstood, overlooked, or alone in their difficulties. Many are navigating the impact of trauma, difficult relationships, loss, or have long-standing emotional difficulties. Clients are often seeking a deeper understanding of themselves, their experiences, and the patterns that shape their lives. Some arrive feeling stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed from trying to cope alone. Others come because they want to heal, grow, and create meaningful change.

Are you struggling with intimacy, sexual confidence, or feeling disconnected from your partner or your own body? Difficulties with sex and relationships are incredibly common, but many people feel too ashamed or anxious to talk about them. This can be from a combination of how sex was talked about in your household, your sex education, early sexual experiences and unpleasant sexual experiences. Therapy offers a safe and supportive space to explore what’s going on and begin to move forward.

Do you find yourself repeating the same patterns and behaviours? Perhaps for years, even decades? Is the simple act of getting through the day (and night) becoming unmanageable and overwhelming? Or perhaps you feel numb, stuck, confused even? Perhaps you do not even know where to begin or what you are looking for? Are you finally ready to let go of what no longer serves you and embrace challenge, change, and desire - rejuvenating your relationships not only with others, but with yourself?

You may have a feeling of loss or have experienced loss and are unsure how to deal with it. Do you feel alone with your struggles, and in need of support and reassurance? I work with clients who are in need of personal support and can't find what they need from the people around them. This may be due to personal crisis in relationships, self-esteem difficulties, life transitions or longer term mental health issues. I usually work with clients in an open ended way and look at both the present and the past. Together we get to know how you tick and see if fresh insights can support you to feel able to face the world again.

I am interested in helping women understand how their inner and outer worlds interact and how the experience of being female in a patriarchal society shapes our emotional lives. If there a specific life event or relationship you would like to address, or painful experiences in your past that you need to safely talk through or you find yourself feeling unhappy, anxious or stuck, I may be able to help.

Women's Issues Counsellors
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
