ACT,
CBT
, EMDR, mindfulness, knowing that everyone is different, I like to work together WITH each individual to tailor the approach to suit their needs best.
I view seeing a psychologist for ones’ mental well being in the same way as having a personal trainer for physical fitness. It makes good health sense. How many sessions and how often depends on the issue and what works best for you. If you have difficulties such as anxiety, low mood, complex trauma, PTSD, OCD, stress or just want to learn more about yourself, I’m here to help. As a psychologist, I’m able to help increase our understanding of ourselves and how any issues have come about and developed in the first place. This understanding can offer much relief in itself but also help to guide the treatment.

Cognitive
Behaviour Therapy and Counselling are ways of helping you manage your mental and emotional health.
It can be difficult to know where to start when feeling depressed or anxious. I appreciate that many people become a little anxious at the prospect of an intense atmosphere in a counselling room. Thats not how I work though. My first aim is to help you relax. To see that yes, it is a 'safe and confidential environment for you to talk about anything that you want'. But there's no need for it to be a heavy and intense atmosphere either. I believe we can be practical, pragmatic and make some real changes without sacrificing empathy or compassion. I have over 20 years experience.

I specialise in
cognitive
behaviour therapy (
CBT
) which has been shown to help in a range of situations, such as anxiety and depression.
We all are subject to emotions like low moods, worries and frustrations; it’s all part of being human, the brain we inherit and the effect of our environment. However, when these emotions turn chronic, exaggerated and persistent, we suffer from situations like depression, anxiety and anger, which impact on our lives and well-being. These emotions spill over, adversely affecting our goals and relationships at home and at work

My doctorate training specialised in
cognitive
, psychodynamic, behavioural and systemic theory and application meaning I have a broad skillset to draw on.
I have been lucky enough in my career to date to work with some incredibly inspiring and brave individuals who have been at a crossroads in their life. Sometimes making change felt frightening or impossible due to past beliefs, stuck patterns of behaviour or limiting thought processes. Others were struggling to move on after devastation, illness, loss or identity crisis. I believe it is a privilege to be able to guide those in need at these times due to the courage and vulnerability they show. They are asking from the heart for a new beginning - to break from the past, not feel scared by the future and live truly in the present.

Some of the psychological approaches I may draw upon, include: psychodynamic counselling,
cognitive
-behavioural therapy (
CBT
) and person-centred counselling.
Counselling provides you with a confidential space within which to talk about issues that are troubling you so that you can explore your thoughts and feelings about them. This can offer you the opportunity to reflect on the past to gain an understanding of your current situation, so that together, we can find new solutions or more helpful coping strategies to help you reach your goals. I can offer you a confidential space to talk and explore the issues with which you are seeking support. By focusing on your goals, we can work together to help you find your way and reach your goals.

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?
Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario (catastrophizing) or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.
When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?
It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.
How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?
To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.
Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?
CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
