Having a child with a social, emotional or mental health need can be extremely challenging and I believe in supporting parents through this process and will meet and communicate with you at intervals whilst supporting your child.
As a psychodynamic counsellor with 15 years experience both in the education and NHS sector, I have worked with a range of clinical themes including: trauma, parental illness and terminal illness, anxiety, incontinence, ADHD, absconding, abuse, domestic violence, bereavement and grief, aggression, psychosomatic illness, disassociation disorder, depression, LGBTQ+. This list is not exhaustive to my knowledge and understanding to the many other themes that clients may present with. If you are willing to go on this journey with me and to trust me with your mental health, I will be there to support you every step of the way

A Masters level psychodynamically trained counsellor, who specialises in working with neurotypical and neurodivergent Children and Young People who have experienced Trauma and Abuse during their life journey.
When life is a challenge and we feel alone or unsupported, it is my belief that we can all find our 'place of peace'. Sometimes we simply need to connect with the 'right person' for a period of time to re-align our thoughts and feelings. If we can calm our inner self we can give ourselves an opportunity to navigate an alternative pathway to the one that we have found ourselves to be on.

A warm, relational approach is the foundation of my work with children, young people and their parents.
My work is guided by relation psychoanalysis, underpinned by research into child development and neuroscience. An attuned therapeutic relationship is therefore key, and the communication through our conscious and unconscious relationship is enhanced by the use of the sandtray and creative mediums, which safely embody inner experience through metaphor.

My name is Rachel, and I am an Art Psychotherapist based in Colchester, Essex. I have an MA in Art Psychotherapy from Goldsmiths College, University of London. I practise using a non-directive psychodynamic approach, which means you are free to use the art materials in your own way. This method encourages exploration of how past experiences may influence your current thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Through this process, we can build trust, self-awareness, and help you better understand your emotions and behaviours.

Whether you are navigating a late ADHD/Autism diagnosis, struggling with body image, or seeking support for your child or teenager, I am here to help you move from "just surviving" to feeling grounded.
I am psychotherapist, which means we look beneath the surface. For adults, this involves exploring how past experiences shape current feelings and relationships. For children (ages 4-12), I use play-based therapy—including sand tray and art because children often show us what they cannot yet say. My practice is neuroaffirmative and sensory aware.

Is your child or young person struggling emotionally?
Sometimes children are overwhelmed by big feelings and don’t know what those feelings are about or how to cope. Together, by communicating their inner worlds through art, sandtray work and through play, we can put words to their distress, build self-regulation and coping skills, process their experiences and make the changes necessary to help them thrive.

My name is Jodie, and I offer creative, client-led counselling sessions for children and young people who may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or struggling with big emotions.
I feel that counselling is most successful when there is a good, trusting relationship between the client and the counsellor, this is my priority when starting with a new client. I don’t aim to “fix” the child, but instead to help them build confidence, discover their own strengths, and develop tools they can use to manage their feelings.

I work with children, young people and adults to better understand and cope with complicated feelings, improve difficult relationships and learn practical skills to feel more confident and content.
Everyone faces challenges from time to time. This is important and helps us to grow and develop our resilience and wellbeing. However, sometimes life can feel tricky for prolonged periods of time and can leave us feeling overwhelmed and worried that things may never get any better. A clinical psychologist can support us to better understand the social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties we are experiencing. They can help us to develop our own resilience by introducing new ways of thinking about and managing situations that leaves us feeling less troubled and more content.

I am a highly experienced Person Centred registered counsellor Accredited with the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists, working with children, young people and young adults.
I work in a sensitive manner enabling me to use different therapeutic approaches to suit individual personalities and presenting issues therefore treating each client as unique. When working with younger clients I work creatively with art, toys, puppets and sand tray which can help express and understand their feelings easier than solely talking therapy.

FAQ - About Child Therapy
When does a child need to see a therapist?
Children naturally experience emotional ups and downs. Sometimes, though, they need support from a professional. A child may benefit from therapy if their emotions or behaviours change significantly within a short period of time. For example, if a child usually spends time with friends after school but begins isolating in their room, further inquiry is warranted. Other areas for concern include altered sleep patterns, lack of appetite, intense anger, irritability, or hopelessness, or developmental regression in young children (bedwetting, thumb-sucking).

What can a child therapist help with?
A therapist can help with any difficult experience a child may encounter growing up, including learning problems or anxiety related to school, relationship challenges with friends or parents, bullying, intense emotions or phobias, divorce and family dynamics, or the death of a pet or loved one. A therapist can help children process their experience and develop coping skills in an age-appropriate way

What therapy types are most suitable for children?
Children can benefit from different forms of therapy, including family therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, play therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and exposure therapy, depending on their condition. Play therapy is a great option for younger children who may not be able to fully articulate their feelings. In this approach, kids play with toys and games while a therapist observes and helps the child express their emotions and develop coping skills.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
