Our emotions are designed to keep us safe. However, our minds don’t always respond the way we would like to, with many of us struggling to manage depression and/or anxiety. Sometimes presenting challenges in our relationships and other areas of our lives. Thankfully, we can adapt our brain, soothe, understand, and teach it how to respond more helpfully.

Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or exhausted from trying to cope with difficulties they don’t fully understand. Some are exploring whether they may be autistic and are seeking a thoughtful adult autism assessment to better understand themselves. Others are struggling with the impact of past experiences or trauma and want support to process these using approaches such as EMDR. Many have spent years masking or managing alone and are looking for a supportive space to gain clarity, reduce distress, and move forward with greater self-understanding and compassion.

Maybe you are struggling at present to understand why things are the way they are? Sometimes we can all get stuck in patterns of relating, both with ourselves and others, that are not the most helpful or productive. Sometimes this means our relationships might suffer, or our life, career and family choices. Having therapy with an experienced practitioner can help you. Therapy is about building a shared understanding of what you are facing. If you are struggling with trauma, family issues, career issues, relationships, abuse, coping difficulties, I can help. I am also happy working with children and adolescents

If you’re here, something may not feel right. You might be managing anxiety that never fully switches off, carrying the weight of trauma, navigating relationship strain, or simply feeling stuck and exhausted. I pride my practice on being down-to-earth, professional, non-judgmental and confidential. Therapy with me is structured and evidence-based, but never cold or overly clinical. Clients often say they value having a therapist who is steady, straightforward and genuinely human. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Some people come with clear goals; others just know they can’t keep going as they are.

Reaching out to a counsellor or therapist is not a sign of weakness—it’s a courageous act of self-care.
Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. Speaking with a therapist can provide a safe space to explore your feelings and find clarity—it’s a step toward taking care of yourself. Or, if things with your partner are wobbly and you are struggling to get on as well as you used to; perhaps you are arguing more and you seem to have lost the magic of when you first met, then reach out and let's talk it through. You don’t have to go through this alone. A therapist can help you navigate what you’re feeling and support you in finding ways to feel better as a couple or an individual.

I mainly use CBT, with adaptations including; CFT, ACT and Positive Psychology.
I help people who are feeling sad, stressed, or 'like something isn't right'. First by jointly building an understanding of their experience, then working with them towards recovery and beyond- to help them thrive. My work often involves; clarifying what's important to someone and helping them attain it, helping people to overcome the effect of a difficult experience, or simply assisting them to understand themselves better. I use evidence-based therapies and can also incorporate Stoic or other philosophical viewpoints to help build personal resilience and gain the confidence to live authentically.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
