Therapist for Men. "How are you?" "Fine", "All good", "Not bad".
Have you been asked this question and given a similar response?
You've been putting a mask on for too long, trying to keep it together and be a 'man'.
But now keeping that mask on is becoming harder and harder.
I specialise in working with men and know the power of having someone to share with and not be judged in return, no matter what it is you're facing. I know because I've experienced it myself and I've seen countless clients experience the same thing.

Are you looking for a counsellor who is not only experienced but also truly affirming of your gender, sexuality, and relationship diversity? If you’ve experienced trauma, you may be seeking someone who is informed and experienced. You deserve to feel safe, understood, and supported as you bring your whole self into therapy, without the need to educate your counsellor about your identities. I bring a wealth of experience in both these areas, shaped by my clinical practice, my research on LGBTQIA+ health, and my academic background.

My ideal clients are individuals or couples who feel emotionally or relationally stuck, unsettled, or caught in painful patterns. They may be dealing with anxiety, shame, trauma, loss, intimacy difficulties, trust ruptures, family conflict, or repeated arguments that no longer feel workable. Often they come at a point of rupture or transition, or simply because something doesn’t feel right. They want greater clarity, emotional freedom, stronger boundaries, deeper understanding, and more satisfying ways of relating to themselves and others.

I’m Ben, a psychotherapist and counsellor working online, on the phone and in-person from central Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. I am a person-centred (or client-centred) therapist which means that our sessions are about you, your life and your experiences. You might have a very clear idea of why you would like therapy, or you might have a more general feeling that therapy might be useful for you. All that matters is that it's your choice. Wherever things start, my experience is therapy can be a route to understanding, healing and growth; it can bring a kind of peace with where you are, where you've been and where you want to go.

I believe that inside all of us there are the same desires and needs: to be safe, to be heard, to be fulfilled, to live in an authentic way, to be understood, to love and be loved.
It's not unusual to find ourselves in situations where these needs and wants aren't being met. Life has a habit of throwing things at us - stress, loss, bereavement, anxiety and so on - that can set us on the wrong course.
Being a person in the world isn't easy. Relationships are tough; work and family too, but I believe that therapy can help us to develop a better relationship with ourselves - and that is the most important relationship of all.

I specialise in working with adults who are navigating big life transitions, often as a result of trauma. I work with grief, loss, sexual trauma, break-ups and burnout, and the big questions these experiences bring: Who am I now? What really matters? How can I live with more authenticity?
You might be stuck in familiar relationship patterns, swinging between craving closeness and connection and then finding yourself overwhelmed and wanting to withdraw. You may struggle to set boundaries and ask for what you need, never feeling good enough or constantly comparing yourself to others.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
