Psychotherapy:
Making the decision to come to therapy/counselling can be difficult and sometimes anxiety provoking, and finding someone who you feel comfortable with can be a positive and reassuring start. I offer an initial, no commitment 30 minute session where we can begin to get to know each other, and begin to look at what you would to focus on in the work that we may do together. Part of the first session will include an outline of how I work, what to expect, discussing a working agreement which covers confidentiality etc, but it is mainly an opportunity to talk and be heard in a respectful, non-judgmental space.

Grief sits next to anger.
Some people arrive knowing exactly what's wrong. Most don't. They just know something has to change.
They're tired of going round in circles. Tired of the same arguments, the same anxious feelings, the same version of themselves showing up. Couples navigating affairs and betrayals, or just growing apart. Individuals carrying work-related stress, or a career shift that's shaken who they are. Professionals brilliant at their job and falling apart at home.
I work with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy, and with individuals at their own pace, to find what's driving the pattern you're stuck in, and a way through it together.

The decision to have counselling is a really brave one, and it might be difficult to know if it’s the right time for you. You can have counselling for all sorts of reasons, and there’s no such thing as a right or wrong one. You might be feeling overwhelmed or anxious; perhaps you’ve experienced a bereavement or a relationship breakdown, or you might not know what the reason is, and that is okay. Sometimes therapy is difficult, and it can bring up things that are hard to face, but you don’t have to do so alone.

How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
