Marriage Counselling in Cirencester
Relationship therapy offers a supportive, non-judgemental space where partners can explore their thoughts, feelings, and relationship patterns together.
Individual therapy offers a place of honesty for the battles in our heads, from medical diagnoses and past trauma it may include, questions of sexuality, gender expression, and everyday negative thinking. As life changes, so can how we feel about ourselves, others, and what we want. At times we may feel alone, whatever our relationship status. Ruptures can affect trust, communication, emotional safety and leave us hurt &/or uncertain. Therapy provides space to reflect, reconnect, and find meaning in uncertain times. It can reduce anxiety, deepen our understanding, and support harmony between inner needs and the demands we face.

You may be thinking about counselling for many reasons, eg:
You’re trying to come to terms with a loss, or illness.
You're going through a significant life change (e.g., retirement, kids leaving home, career change, relationship breakdown, relocation, becoming a parent).
You may feel angry, sad, depressed, anxious, confused, stuck – and perhaps not know why, or what to do about it.
You may want to make sense of things that happened in the past, or improve a relationship.
Whatever your reason for seeking counselling, it can help you to understand yourself better, and feel more confident to make the changes that are important to you.

Deciding to start therapy can be a big decision. There are so many types of therapy out there. My view is that we all have the potential to lead fulfilling lives but we sometimes get stuck along the way. My task is to work alongside you, creating a warm, supportive and non-judgemental environment for us to figure out what isn’t working for you and support you to find more creative ways to face what life throws your way. You might have a specific goal we work towards or you might not know exactly what you need but feel you need someone to speak to. That's fine.

I'm Emilie and I started Wanderwood Counselling & Psychotherapy as I wanted to work with individuals, couples and groups to explore anything they might want to bring to a non-judgmental and empathetic space.
I also have a particular interest in working with clients who are from a multicultural background or have lived in other countries, including those who may have lived in more than one country in childhood, and exploring the impacts that might have, whether in relation to their identity, sense of belonging or other parts of their experience.

You may be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of yourself. Perhaps anxiety or low mood is affecting your daily life, or you’re struggling with relationships, confidence, sleep, or motivation. You might feel caught in unhelpful habits or thought patterns, or sense that something needs to change but aren’t sure where to begin. Often people seek therapy because they want relief from emotional distress, from feeling out of control, or from repeating the same patterns. Beneath that, there is usually a deeper wish to understand themselves better, to feel more at ease, and to live with greater clarity and choice.

Confused about where you're at in life or what's next? Want to be more open and engaged in relationships? My aim is to help you get to know yourself better and move you forward from where you might feel stuck. Everyone is different and counselling is not a 'one size fits all' approach. Managing life's difficulties thrown upon us can be challenging in many ways, but I will be alongside you every step of the way. Through our relationship I will help you unravel your thoughts and feelings but I ask for self-compassion; it may be bumpy.

Marriage Counselling Counsellors
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
