I'm an integrative, person-centred, trauma-informed counsellor, with experience in working with clients from a wide range of backgrounds, who are looking for someone who they can talk to in a non-judgemental, confidential space. You may want space to talk about presenting issues, or help to explore how you're impacted by issues faced, and find best-fitting solutions through talking it over. Working empathetically and treating clients as unique individuals, I can offer creative, or mindful strategies, using psycho-education, as a way of helping to understand how the body responds to stress and trauma and how symptoms can be overcome.

As a qualified integrative therapist, respect is at the centre of my beliefs. I fervently believe that an individual, no matter who you are, should have the arena in which to be heard, without prejudice, without judgement, and with compassion. Our inclusive space will be one of confidentiality, trust and a pace that you feel able to go at, and my hope is that we will work to resolve, or at least identify, some, if not all, of the reasons that you've decided to reach out.

Life sometimes throws us curve balls and I am here to provide a listening ear and non-judgmental space. Its twists and turns can cause us to respond in rote ways learned in early childhood. I work in a psychodynamic way; as a trained art psychotherapist I also value creative responses to difficulty.

I work using art & movement, and draw on myths, stories and theory, whatever interests you.
You may seem to the world to be successful, sure of yourself, and in control whilst feeling increasingly isolated as you battle, perhaps in secret, with your fear, anxiety, loneliness or past. You may sense that part of you is hidden, maybe even from yourself, tripping you up when it matters most, that your life is not quite what you hoped or your choices are unfulfilling. You may wish to know your own heart, to be on your own side, and to be able engage authentically and meaningfully with your life. Working together we can listen out for your quiet inner voice, the one that already knows you and already knows how to be.

Who said only children can use art to freely express and be playful? ".
The protective power of arts in health and mental health has been with us for millennia and today is evidence based. Daily life's emotional demands often go unnoticed and coping with anger, fear and sadness is socially accepted to happen in silence. Nourishing and protecting our mental health can get easily neglected. Although family and friends can play a wonderful supportive role in times of need they may not be enough in times of crisis. Making the choice to look after our mental health is our first step to personal growth. Making art is creative and fun. Being part of a supportive and safe group is therapeutic.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
