I work with adults who want a supportive space to explore what’s going on for them. You may be concerned about addiction, feeling anxious, low, burnt out or carrying more than you let on. My approach is pluralistic, which means I don’t fit you into a model — we find what works for you. Clients often tell me they value my warmth, steadiness and the sense of being met as a whole person.

As a counsellor, I practice in a pluralistic way which means I draw upon different theoretical approaches when I work with you as an individual – after all, there is only one of you in the world! My aim is to attune to your individual needs and I strive to work in an authentic down to earth way that is interactive and collaborative. Counselling can be daunting so I will work with you at your pace, offering you a space that is non-judgemental, respectful and confidential. Sarah is a successful paralegal in the City who struggled with shameful feelings and self-disgust most of her life. Typically as Christmas was approaching and lots of parties invitations started to arrive on her desk, she would surrender into procrastination and self-criticism, in order to avoid a situation she felt likely to fail, supported by an exaggerated set of predictions about social embarrassment or other social disasters. Sarah struggles to improve her confidence and esteem - in spite of a successful academic and professional life. Her efforts are genuine but exhausting and she often is trapped by episodes of depression.

We all have the capacity for growth, given the right conditions. Part of what therapy can be is the creation of a space where those conditions are met. During our 50 minute sessions, we will work toward a common goal. My role is to try to understand your lived experiences, in a confidential, non-discriminatory environment. Not to judge you. But most importantly therapy is about what you want to use the time and space for. People think of counselling as a last resort. We often keep our problems to ourselves, we compound all that feeling and pain and it emerges in our day to day lives in different ways, depression, stress, anxiety.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
