If you're anxious or depressed, or feeling stressed because of particular issues in your life then its hard to choose a counsellor that might help you. I never knew whether to pick a therapist that looked as unhinged as I felt, or go for one that seemed to have life sorted! We often feel we have to pretend to seem 'normal' or put a mask on to face to world, but therapy can be the place where you can be yourself (or work out who that could be). I try to offer you space where you are safe to explore what is affecting you, and help you reach a way forward.

Whether you’re dealing with anger, anxiety, bereavement, depression, estrangement, family issues, identity, loneliness, menopause, powerlessness, relationship difficulties, or simply want to talk things through, I offer a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore what you’re feeling, and how you can manage it. We’re all different and we all need to find our own way. I can help you do that. The world throws a lot at us, and expects a lot of us. And, very often, we expect a lot of ourselves too. For many of us, it can help to talk through what we’re dealing with, to help us understand what’s going on and find a way forward.

Hi! I’m Emma and I’m a person-centred therapist. I have found my niche is working with trauma and relationships, often working with individuals who are neurodiverse and LGBTQIA+ due to my own ADHD diagnosis and non-binary identity. However, I have experience working with a wide range of clients and topics. I offer a space where you can just be yourself in all your "weirdness" with it being celebrated, not tolerated. You are not a problem to be fixed, my aim as your therapist is to provide the right conditions to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy to support your growth.

Is something in your life feeling stuck? Together we can look at what the stuckness is and untangle it. I offer a warm space where you can be yourself, in full acceptance. A nurturing remote environment where we can build trust within the therapeutic relationship to help you explore whatever it is you bring into the room. As someone with lived experience of Autism and ADHD I have an awareness and understanding of processing needs and how this may come into play during sessions. I wish for you to be comfortable during counselling, we can discuss any adjustments needed. I am non-binary and use they/them pronouns.

Seeking therapy can be as confusing and daunting as the problems that prompt us toward it. I am here to support you through that journey. I see my role as facilitative and aim to help empower you as we define, discover and work jointly toward your goals. I believe we each tend toward our own best interests and that we are our own experts. I also believe growth and healing needs facilitating. To this end, I work relationally and am interested in how our pasts, experience and ways of relating to our experience influence our present.

Person-centred psychotherapy for identity, sense-making, and connection. I work with people who want a space to explore who they are and how they want to live, especially during periods of change, questioning, or transition. Rather than working on one “problem” in isolation, I work with the whole person, creating a space where you are welcomed and understood. This approach supports change that feels meaningful and lasting, not just symptom-focused. My work is informed by a background in music psychology, though sessions are not music-based.

You wake up every morning already exhausted. Getting through the day feels like pushing through quicksand—nothing brings you joy anymore, and you can't remember the last time you felt truly connected to anyone. Maybe you're constantly on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Or you find yourself sabotaging good things in your life and you don't even know why. You're not broken. What you're experiencing makes complete sense—even if it doesn't feel that way right now. These patterns developed for a reason, and together we can understand them and change them.

Transgender Counsellors

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognise a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognise a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
