Choosing me as your counsellor. If you’re looking for a counsellor, you need to find someone who is going to be a good “fit” for you. I believe that the most important part of any counselling is having a good relationship with the therapist. You need to be able to trust me and feel comfortable talking to me about yourself. Otherwise you cannot get the best out of the experience. Contacting a counsellor for the first time can be daunting. You might be nervous or struggling to put things into words. It is okay if you are not quite sure what you want from this, I will do everything I can to put you at your ease.

How often do you allow time to focus purely on your own emotional needs and psychological well-being? Working on yourself in therapy can help to gain a new perspective into past and current experiences, with many benefits from the process. Not least, acquiring more effective coping mechanisms, feeling more in control and to develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself. I work with clients to improve self-esteem, manage stress and anxiety, recover from trauma, lift out of depression, tackle addictions and resolve conflicts both in yourself and in your relationships, aiming to build confidence and resilience.

I know that life can be hard sometimes and we can feel overwhelmed, making relationships, work and daily tasks feel like a chore. Sometimes we are not even sure why we do feel low, but we just know we don’t want to feel this way anymore….I work with many different presenting issues such as the loss of a special person, anxiety, depression, stress and low self-esteem. My background has primarily been working with survivors of domestic abuse and I understand that even when the relationship has ended, and the risk has been removed, the healing process has only just begun…

I have a deep trust in the healing capacity that a counselling relationship can provide. I believe each individual brings with them their own qualities & experiences, everyone is unique. Seeing beyond labels to the person, I recognize that it is the individual that knows themself best. I strive to build relationships in which clients say they feel empowered & listened to as I offer an attentive, understanding and accepting space. The nature of my counselling practice allows the individuals I work with to acquire compassion & gentleness for self, to develop healthy boundaries that allow personal growth and healing.

Talking therapy is a commitment and is hard work for both the client and therapist, but if embraced fully it can be truly life changing. I am an integrative therapist and I use principles from Person Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Relational Therapy to inform my practice philosophy. This means sessions will be focused on you, your aims and our working relationship. I will offer a safe place to build trust, uncover obstacles and we will work together to challenge perceptions and build self awareness. The idea is that true self awareness, along with support and guidance will lead to change in whatever area you wish.

Hey There, Trauma can present as symptoms connected to nervous system disregulation, such as anxiety, depression, low mood, negative thinking, destructive behaviour, difficulty in experiencing emotion, lack of drive and enthusiasm, isolation, a lack of trust in others and a fear of connection or poor relationships, dissociative tendencies and hyper sensitivities. I work with cutting edge methods including Brainspotting and the SSP (safe sound protocol) (polyvagal theory) that are grounded in the most recent developments in neuro science and how we understand the impact of our early environment on our here and now adult experiences.

Bipolar Disorder Counsellors
What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?
Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.
What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?
Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.
What kinds of problems does therapy help with?
Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.
What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?
Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
