I support people to live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives, by reducing emotional distress and challenging unhelpful or rigid thought patterns. I have practiced privately for a number of years, and have also worked at the Priory Hospital, an addiction support agency and within numerous colleges. I work with individuals and with couples. Perhaps you are fed up with feeling, living or thinking in a certain way, and this is affecting your work life, your romantic relationships, your friendships or your self-esteem.

Thinking about therapy but unsure where to start? Walk & Talk therapy offers a relaxed alternative to sitting face-to-face in a room, especially if you’ve never had therapy before. Research suggests that being in nature can help conversations flow, bringing clarity, perspective, and a sense of forward movement. People come feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or mentally busy, wanting space to think more clearly - and often find it makes a real difference.

I help with anxiety, burnout, relationship patterns, self-esteem, loss, and life or career transitions.
I work with people in high-pressure roles who are used to holding things together for everyone else - at work, at home, in their business. On the outside you may look ‘fine’ but inside it might feel very different. Perhaps the stress doesn’t ever switch off, decisions keep circling, and there maybe a quiet sense you’ve lost touch with yourself.

As my ideal client, you're a professional, facing tricky obstacles at work or at home, who knows that you've got to grow to live better. You know about personal development, but are unconvinced by the usual solutions. You want to know how all your problems fit together, and develop a step by step programme for personal change, that addresses the difficulties you face in priority order. You don't see yourself as "mentallly ill"; rather, you're stuck in a difficult place on the journey of life. You're looking for the support, knowledge and skills to get to a better place, a map and a straightforward guide on the path to wellbeing.

I also work with people who are struggling in their work or career.
My approach is to listen carefully in a non-judgemental way, to understand you, and to help you to find ways to be happier and more satisfied. It's not my style to sit quietly and nod, but to be part of the process as you figure things out and make good decisions for yourself. I hope you will find me accepting, engaging, and challenging where appropriate.

At times, things can feel overwhelming and looking for a therapist is a big step, but one that puts you on the right path to better mental health. Life is rarely straightforward and sometimes we need help to unpick areas that are beginning to feel problematic - anxiety, depression, low mood, self-doubt, overwhelm can all be challenging. Dealing with life events such as menopause, workplace burnout, sexual or gender identity can all lead to us not knowing where to turn. If this is you, if you need a safe, non-judgmental space to talk, to feel heard in a warm and compassionate space then perhaps I can help you move forward.

You're holding it together. But it's costing you. Maybe it's stress that won't switch off. Anxiety that follows you everywhere. Something from the past that still shows up in the present. Or simply the weight of too much, for too long. You've tried managing it. You might even be good at it. But you're tired of managing... and you want it to actually change. That's what I do. I'm Dr Matt Slavin, Clinical Psychologist and EMDR Therapist. I don't just treat symptoms. I fully assess and understand what's driving them, then build a focused plan to change it at the root.

They can be stuck for many reasons, but commonly this is anxiety, depression or life events, including the death of someone close, the loss of a job or illness, to name a few.
I work integratively, which means that I have a toolkit of approaches that we choose from, guided by where the source of your problems lie, e.g. if you believe you have several parts of you that argue internally, we may run an experiment to make the conversations explicit so we can examine the internal conflict and negotiate a way forward.

Career Guidance Counsellors
How do I know if I need career counselling?
Determining whether a career counsellor is needed involves assessing one's current career and identifying what changes can be made to improve one's overall quality of life. In particular, feelings of loss of motivation, fatigue, anxiety, depression, procrastination, or ongoing levels of high stress can all be indicative of a need for career-related counselling. In addition, individuals changing jobs may want the decision-making support or self-reflection opportunities provided by a career counsellor.

Who can benefit from career counselling?
Anyone can benefit from the self-reflection, skill development, and stress management techniques that career counselling can provide. However, individuals who are feeling overwhelmed or burnt out with their current job and individuals considering a major career change may particularly benefit from career counselling to improve their wellbeing. Additionally, individuals who are facing issues in their current job, such as coworker relationship challenges or not meeting performance goals, may benefit from the perspective that a career counsellor can provide. College-age or young professionals may also uniquely benefit from career counselling as they make key decisions surrounding education and job training that will impact their career trajectory.

How long does career counselling typically last?
The length of career counselling can vary greatly depending on the needs of the individual and what type of support they are seeking Career coaching or advising services—which serve clients in a specific, goal-oriented capacity—often last for a shorter duration and are sometimes only a single session or a few sessions in length. In contrast, career counselling as part of a more integrative therapeutic relationship with a counsellor may last longer, particularly if the issues faced by the client are longstanding and/or more complex in nature; in such cases, individuals may expect therapy to last multiple months or longer.

How to prepare for career counselling?
Clients can prepare for career counselling sessions by outlining the specific topics they would like to address with the counsellor, such as current job challenges or hopes for the future of their career. Compiling one's thoughts on such topics often requires reflection on one's career and future goals, which in itself can be beneficial for session preparation. Clients may also want to put together a list of questions they would like to ask the counsellor, particularly if the career counsellor they are seeing has particular expertise in a given career area. Conducting research into potential future jobs, training opportunities, or support resources in one's area may also help clients prepare for career counselling by providing them with a background of what resources are available in their area.
