Hi. I’m Lisa and I’m hoping you might like me to be your counsellor. Why choose me? Well, if you like a counsellor who considers the relationship between us the most important thing about therapy, if you like someone who is able to laugh with you, call you out and hold your emotions no matter how big they are, then I might be a good fit for you. People who I have worked with describe me as kind, compassionate, honest and challenging.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist, trained to listen attentively and to pay particular attention to what might be going on behind the words themselves. The past casts a long shadow and often it is in understanding our early experiences that we can see how it continues to play out in our present. Anxiety, depression, addictions, our responses to traumatic events and difficulties in relationships all have their roots in earlier experiences and how we had to cope with them at the time. Change comes from understanding the underlying cause of our pain and distress.

I help people feel more in control of their emotions, more self-aware, and more compassionate towards themselves. I blend professional and personal insight as a psychotherapeutic counsellor, and my background in career mentorship gives me a grounded understanding of workplace pressures and chronic stress. I work with adults, adolescents, and children, paying particular attention to the “inner child” in adults — using structured and creative methods to address unmet needs, old fears, and limiting beliefs. Together, we will work to meet life's challenges with calm, quiet self-criticism and foster genuine self-acceptance.

I am an experienced, Relate trained, counsellor specialising in relationships, depression and anxiety. Maybe you have tried hard to improve things but so far nothing much has changed. My role would be to help you identify what needs to change and to give you techniques and insights to help implement those changes. Relationships need to adapt and change over time and this can be difficult. Problems are often caused by poor communication and we can look at techniques to enable you to communicate in a way that avoids conflict and promotes a greater understanding of each other.

When you feel isolated in debilitating anxiety, or stuck in grief, depression or abuse, life can seem overwhelming and out of control.
As we look at what is affecting you now from past and present experiences, as well as underlying relationship patterns, we can begin to understand what shapes and triggers your current experiences. Gaining insight through self-understanding will help you find your inner resources to deal with your anxieties, so that life feels manageable again.

This is wide ranging, for example witnessing or experiencing a car accident, military trauma, sexual or emotional abuse, bullying, a violent crime, or social humiliation.
We will work as a team to develop resources to manage high levels of emotion, flashbacks, nightmares, and/or self-criticism that may have developed after difficult life events. We will also understand the underlying cause(s) of distress, help ‘process’ these experiences, and learn how to turn towards healthy patterns of behaviour to help meet your needs.

Something feels harder than it should and you might not even have the words for it yet. Maybe you're overwhelmed, anxious, or carrying grief you can't quite name. Perhaps becoming a parent has brought unexpected emotions to the surface. Or you're in the middle of a life transition that's left you feeling lost. I offer warm, relational psychotherapy tailored entirely to you, a space to slow down, make sense of what's happening and feel less alone with it.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
