Trauma is a particular focus of my work, for which I apply a structured recovery model, that I tailor to meet client's needs.
Welcome to my profile. I hope you find the support you need, whether with me or another counsellor. For those who have taken that important step, I enjoy working alongside and celebrating with them when improvements in their mental health begin to show. This can involve getting to the root causes of symptoms, which is typically connected with 'what has happened to you'. We are shaped by our past, which is key to our understanding of 'self'. By giving attention to the feelings that play out in the present we can learn how to take back control of our emotions to live a better life, including in how we relate to self and others.

I am highly experienced in supporting people to adjust to life-limiting and/or degenerative health conditions and have particular interest in working with medically unexplained symptoms and physical health trauma.
Life is full of challenges, and we can all struggle to cope with the impact of difficult events or circumstances. Therapy can be a useful support in navigating tricky periods and can help people deal with distress in a way that minimises its impact on quality of life. I work with individuals in a collaborative way, using a process of formulation to develop a shared understanding of psychological difficulties. The direction and content of our work will depend on an individual’s personal goals for the future and can range from exploratory work to a more structured approach focusing on the development of self-management skills.

If you are worrying more than usual, having nightmares or flashbacks to a traumatic event, suffering from disturbed sleep or are more feeling irritable and hyper-vigilant than usual, you may be suffering from a reaction to trauma.
I use a number of therapeutic approaches that acknowledge the mind and the body. I am an EMDR therapist, have extensive training in third wave CBT and underpin all this with an integrative, contemporary approach to therapy based on current research. If this means nothing to you, don't worry I can explain if you get in touch.

I specialise in working with people who have experienced complex trauma, including attachment/developmental and relational trauma.
As a clinical psychologist with several years of additional specialist training, I help people understand how their struggles typically make sense in the context of their experiences. Drawing on mainly experiential therapy models, I tailor my interventions to the individual I am working with, rather than offering a 'one size fits all' approach.

If you're feeling like you can't get control of your 'self' in some fundamental way, you might like to try IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy. This will give you a way of understanding all the different parts of yourself, and all your reactive thoughts and behaviours, so that you can live from a calm place inside - even if that feels impossible right now. Imagine being able to feel but calmly respond, rather than jumping between panicking reactions, or being able to clearly know what you want, rather than feeling stuck. IFS offers a way to gain a calm, clear and energised way of managing ourselves.

Contact me if you are looking for a safe person with whom you can explore matters that are important to you; this may include relationships, emotions, thoughts that concern you, or blocks you feel. The focus of our work would be you and your life. You may have goals you wish to achieve or feel hopeless and stuck. Whatever your concerns, our work may entail looking at the past or taking a more solution-focused approach. My approach assumes that the quality of our meeting is more important than any technique or theory I use and that different issues have meanings particular to the individual. Open communication is the key.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
